INstalled ME on my (until now reliable) AMD 400mHz (Ali chipset) Matrox g400 dual head 393mB ram machine. After booting me the system will either hang or break down into coloured lines/boxes and freeze eventually (after a couple of minutes it just stops responding). after running system info under problem devices it tells me that I have error code 22 on PCI/PCI for IRQ Holders 5,6,7,8,9 but offers no good suggestions as to what is going on. Dr Watson suggested that I disable the module(?) mmtask.tsk but doesn't tell me how or where? needless to say this is very frustrating. I am using the AGP and IDE drivers patches from Aladdin for the chipset.

sorry I dont have a solution but was wondering if you had found anything out because i have a similar setip and very similar problem

error 22 appears to be nothing more dangerous than unsigned drivers, which microsoft don't seem to like for some reason.
Nearly every machine running ME seems to have some?!
ALi drivers can sometimes be a bit screwy though, they seem to have lots of problems with dma, so try disabling it. They also have probs with irq steering, often running better with it disabled.(Device manager/system/PCI bus/settings )

well i have the same problem...got windows me like 3 weeks ago and i have the same error 22 and the computer freezes..I have a 500 mhz and still have all the same problems.//Dr wastson tells me the same thing disable the mmtask.tsk.. and dont tell me where to go....please someone HELP!!!!!

Same problem here, more info:
AMD K6-2/500
ASUS P5A motherboard w/ALi chipset
ST34321A 4.2 GB (primary master)
Creative DVD-6240E (primary slave)
IBM-DPTA-372050 20.5 GB (secondary master)symptoms:
After installing Windows Me on a freshly formatted hard drive, all is well. But after installing ALi M5229 IDE Bus Master driver, which is neccessary in order to enable UltraDMA/33 mode, Windows Me hangs on cold boot, either on the logo splash screen, or on a blue screen with a protection fault error.
Doing a warm boot, either with Ctl-Alt-Del, or the reset button, usually gets Windows Me to load successfully.
Sometimes it takes several attempts, but eventually it will load, and everything seems to work OK.
Have tried several different primary/secondary master/slave combinations with the hard drives and DVD-ROM drive, and that seems to make no difference.
Have tried all versions of the ALi driver currently available:
v3.56
v3.50
v3.40They all result in the same problem, Windows Me just hangs at different points during the cold boot.
Going back to good 'ol Win98SE until ALi or Microsoft addresses this problem, or until I get different hardware.

I'm glad I'm not alone with this problem. Mine freezes on cold boot but works fine on restart. The error code 22 is a bit more than just unsigned drivers. I went to msdos prompt and typed HWINFO/UI and found that my device was listed there as a problem device and others with unsigned drivers were noted as such but not as problem devices. My device is labeled ACPI\PNPOCOF\00000003. I have sent a description of the problem to Microsoft and am waiting on a reply. By the way, I also found in Device Manager, Computer Properties that IRQ 2 is "in use by an unkown device".

I am running k6 500/ax59pro motherboard.
Boots fine, but hangs during operation(usually during scrolling or page opening.
DrWatson also recommends disabling mm.task
module(sys inf loaded modules)but does'nt
explain how and possible results.

Im so glad im not on my own
i thought i had big probs so i started buying all new thinking it was a prob with my pc
im glad im not on my own
i ended up putting win 98se back on

I am experiencing the same problem. Dr. Watson also suggested disabling mmtask.tsk but no one seems to know how to do it. I did run across some info concerning the stacks in CONFIG.SYS. Supposidly adding the line STACKS=9,256 is supposed to help. I am not a programmer by any means so I don't want to mess with this file myself. I am not sure if I am just supposed to add it or replace the current line with this new one. I hope this helps out some folks and if anyone can help me out by providing the steps on how to change the file, I will appreciate it.

The following is how Microsoft addresses the Dr. Watson "mmtask.tsk" message:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q261/8/15.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=mmtask.tsk&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINME
