Was wondering if there was a way to use the Full WindowsME edition to just UPGRADE my Win98 system? I don't feel like formatting and then realizing this thing isn't what it's cracked up to be. Thanks.

A windows me full version will work as an upgrade unless its an OEM.
There is a workaround for using the OEM copy as an upgrade disk. I dont have a link but hopefully someone here will post it.

I think there is an option to keep your Win98 files should you need to "go back" to 98.
Not sure though, I'm using Win Me on a new computer.

It is the OEM :( Can someone find me the workaround? I found one that told me to rename WIN.com and WINVER.exe and when you try to reboot after doing that it cannot boot up to GUI without the win.com file, so it's kinda screwy :( If you could find the workaround that would be great.
Such a fast reply :)

Look for WINME OEM AS UPGRADE.
in the middle of the page.I have never attempted this so i cant be sure it will work. Ive seen this link offered several times. Ive taken advice on several other subjects from this website in the past and each time the trick/tip/secret has done what its supposed to.
I would suggest backing up important data to removable disk before altering your operating system.
Good Luck.

itmdtr is correct about the option of saving your existing system files. The will allow you to downgrade to windows 98 if you choose to do so in add and remove programs.
I dont know if this will work after the workaround is applied. I really have no idea but i assume it may not work because your renaming important 98 files before installing. What do i know eh? :)

To install the OEM copy as an upgrade, all you should need to do is rename win.com in the c:\windows folder. (I've never had to rename winver.exe as per Axcel's website... *shrug*)
If you rename, and not delete... and you want to go back to 98, you should be able to just rename back.
So... boot with a 98 or ME bootdisk.
Choose with cd rom support.Take note of your cd rom drive letter. In DOS it will move down one.
Type:
c:
cd windows
ren win.com win.old
x: (this is your cd rom drive letter)
setupThis should start scandisk and setup.
At the beginning part of setup somewhere you should be asked if you want to save your system files. Say yes.
If you roll back (something that does not work very well at all... just a warning) and you cannot boot into Windows 98:
Boot with a 98 or ME bootdisk
Choose Without cd rom support.Type:
c:
cd windows
ren win.old win.comPull out the bootdisk and hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot.
Remember before upgrading to completly uninstall any antivirus and firewall software. This should make the upgrade a little easier.

If you insert a windows cd that is a newer version that you're running presently a message will pop up stating that the cd that you inserted is a newer version of windows than the version you're running and asks if you would like to upgrade. Just choose yes or ok.

This is one of the reasons i like the way this forum operates.
Every reply to a single thread is on the same page. No expanding or RE:'s to RE:'s that show the same message over and over.
Newgrls feedback about the link I posted will save someone from uneccesary steps.
Ive just replaced the Axcel link i saved earlier with the one to this thread.
Matt, this doesnt happen with OEM copies of windows. They are specifically designed to install an a formatted hardrive because they are intended to be sold with a new computer. The work around allows one to use this OEM copy to upgrade.

you just need to rename win.com to wincom.bak It will upgrade your registry and groups without trouble. Thats all I had to do.
