Hi, I hope I post this right this time. I am runni9ng Windows ME I have a hp pavilion xg843. I just ran fix it utilities and I'm afraid when I was running one of the tests, I accidentally changed registry info on explorer. IE 5.5 opens fine, as well as all of my programs but I cannot open My computer, My documents or anything that requires, exploring or browsing files. Please help, I need to get into my files and I am not sure what to do.

Run system restore to remove the changes you made(hopefully)
Start>Programs>Accesories>System tools>System restore.
Pick a date BEFORE the troubles(like a day or so).

If you were using Ontrack fix it utilities it backs up system files. You can restore them using the System Saver feature. I like Ontrack except for its registry defragmenter. It screws up the registry every time I try to use it, and I have to restore an earlier registry.

try to restore the registry to a previous date
boot up with Startup diskette
choose without cd rom support
at prompt type in scanreg /restore
click on a date when it was ok

Thanks so much, I restored from Fix It and all is well, the windows themselves are opening slowly now but at least they are opening. I appreciate the help!!!

If you run a thorough scandisk and defragment the drive it should speed things up again. JetDefrag is a very good tool for speeding up system response, much better than the regular Windows defragmenter.

What has happened is that IE has either been reassociated to a differnt program or it's association has been deleted or corrupted. What you need to do is go to "Control Panel", then go to "Folder Options". Then click on the "File Types" tab and then look on the left side under the "Extensions" and scroll down to "HTM" and "HTML" and see if the icon by them has the Explorer icon. Odds are that they don't. Now if they don't go to the first one, the HTM ext and click on the "Advanced" tab, then you should see a window with some commands in it. If there is an "open" command then highlight it and click "edit" and then click "browse" and then find the location of internet explorer and it should be located in this location "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" and then click on "IEXPLORE.EXE" and then click ok or save. Repeat these steps for the HTML icon. This seems like it's long and hard, but it's actually quite easy..I've just tried to be as detailed as possible. It might be easier to print this out if you want.
