I need some serious help. My aunt's computer is running windows me and she can't do ANYTHING. When she clicks on the start button, my computer, IE, or anything a message pops up saying "explorer has caused an error in unknown and will shut down" I have had her restart it and still same message in safe mode too. Basically teh computer is a slug right now, is there a way to bypass windows ME and start in DOS so I can try to fix the registry as that is what I Think the problem is?? I can't open a dos prompt because it won't let you access the start menu. Thanks

What about safe mode ?
The only way to boot into dos with windows me is by using a windows me startup disk.
scanreg /restore will load a previous registry.
Unless you know exactly whats going on like she installed something recently or whatever.. you might take this time to scan the machine for a virus with an online scanner, scan for adware & spyware with adaware at lavasoft.
delindex.bat will clear out clutter left behind by the internet.
Also see this article Run ME Well V.4.

I can't go online....She can't do ANYTHING!! anything you touch brings up that error...start menu, explorer, my documents, etc...I know abot the start up disk but she doesn't have one or at least she doesn't knwo where it is...

If she doesnt have a startup disk she cant restart in DOS.
Your online right now. Go to bootdisk.com and download a windows me startup disk. If you live 3000 miles away have her go to a friends house or a library or some place she can download the disk. Tell her to take a blank floppy with her.

I had this problem, and it was because of uninstalling Internet Explorer 6. (Dont ever do this in Windows Me)The only way to fix it is to use a Windows ME boot disk, and start with minimal boot.
Then an Access manager pops up, and you can reinstall Internet Explorer from where it is located on the C: drive.
