I have a CD issue that is driving me to think about upgrading to Windows 2000. If I could ever get a CD to work on this computer I would...LOL!
I have Windows ME...
When the system boots.. it recognizes the CD-ROM.... but by the time it gets to ME, ME doesn't show it un MY COMPUTER.
I tried to boot to a ME startup disk that I had created when the system was fine ... and it tells me there must be something wrong with your CD-ROM... blah blah blah...
Then used a DOS boot disk.. and it sees it fine...
I don't want to lose what I already have on the system, or I would simply put 200 in it...
I can get a hold of a portable CD if I need one.. but this thing is gnawing at me... why can it see it in DOS.. but not on a ME startup disk?
anyone else seen this?all help would be greattly appreciated..

Are you saying Windows cannot see the CDROM drive itself but it can from DOS?
If so them remove and re-install it.If not then could you be a little more specific as I don't understand the question.

OK.. here's how I tested it AFTER it was not showing up in Windows ME
The one CD is an HP .. the original is actualy a combo drive, Toshiba SD-M1302.
Testing was done with the CD as a MASTER drive .. connected to the secondary IDE controller.
a. Booted to WIndows ME statup disk, but still could NOT see the CD
b. Booted using MS-DOS 6.0 Boot disk, CAN see the CD and read from it..
c. Replaced the CD with a CD from another machine...
d. Booted using Windows ME ... still could NOT see it in ME . (When it was powering up, the CD was listed on the screen)
e. Booted to ME startup disk again .. still can NOT see the CD
f. Booted to MS-DOS disk, and again CAN see the CD
h. Booted to a Windows 98 startup disk, still can NOT see the CD (again the CD name is listed during power up)
i. replaced the CD Cable
repeated steps e thru h and again only the DOS boot disk recognizes it...
j. moved the IDE cable to the primary IDE controller ... disconecting my hard drive .. restarted... went thru the same tests and still only seen when using the MS-DOS boot disk.
k. finally, I connected BOTH CDs to a Windows 98 system, and W98 sees them fine..This one is driving me nuts.. makes absolutely no sense...

I'm using window me i try to update again my pc to window me since is not support some function by the time system asking for key i dont have the key i try to go back to window 98 i cant. I try to put different window me cd with key not accept. what can i do?

Mesich.... that link doesn't address the issue....
I got around the issue by using a portable CD and upgrading to W2000... found the "missing in ME CD/DVD" immediately...
Still don't understand what happened... and that will gnaw at me ... LOL!
