My portable hard disk can be read by Windows XP & it is formatted in NTFS format. However, when I bring it to my Windows ME computer, it keeps asking me to reformat the hard disk. Why is this so? Is it because my Windows ME is formatted in FAT32 format. If so, how do I use my hard disk on Windows ME PC?

Windows ME natively only supports FAT12/16/32, it has never supported NTFS file systems....

Thats is why it is always better to format in FAT32.

solution is to install (to ME) one of the freebie ntfs "reader" utils; ntfs.com and sysinternals.com are two sites that offer a freebie version of the util.

You can use the reader, or if the drive is not too big, back up all the data and reformat to fat32.
