Hello: I have an old hp system running WinME as an upgrade to Win98. The system had become very slow for the past month when last week i started the system. Everything seemed normal until the Windows ME splash screen appeared. After the splash screen disappeared nothing happened and quicky ScanDisk came up checking for errors on the local C: drive. When it was done, nothing else happened, the ScanDisk window disappeared and nothing else loaded. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del, it shows three programs running: Accagnt, Hotkey and Msgsrv32(Not Responding). I can end all the programs by cliking the "End Task" button one by one. However, this does not solve anything, still the screen stays there doing nothing. I reboot and again the cycle repeats, only this time another program is in the task manager window: Cmdninst. Again I shutdown all the programs without results of any kind. The cycle begins Also, I have no CDs to help in the restoration of the system.
I want to know what happend and maybe why? Is there any chance of recovering the data?(if the HD is not dead)
Ricardo, SWAG, gut's telling me you have too much running in the background and something is getting stuck in a loop. Certain things MUST run in order for your machine to function. Lots of others CAN run. Find a list of 'MUSTS' @: http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck. HTH. Ed in Texas.
Yes, it's a good idea to control just what is starting up, however Msgsrv32 Not Responding is the likeliest culprit. Might have to research a bit to determine the most appropriate course of action
Your data is probably ok, seems like more of a Windows 'issue'
"Also, I have no CDs"
May or may not be necessary, but never a good situation - on ME machines, the installation files might be on the HDD in C:\windows\options\install (if needed)
If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers
try starting in "safe mode" by holding down the Ctrl key just after the Bios screen displays. This may take a few times to get it right if you have never done it on this machine before. If you can get to safe mode go to control panel/add remove programs/click on the startup disk tab at the top, and create a start disk (you will need a blank floopy). If successful post back.
