Comment: I was installing the software for Anypoint Home Network (wireless). during installation, my PC w/ Windows ME was very sluggish. The final step in the installation is a reboot. When I rebooted, the system get hung up on the message "Updating Configuration files. This make take a few minutes".. After about 10 minutes, another message, "cannot upgrade from %1 to %2" comes up.. and keeps coming up every 10 minutes. If I use startup disk to get to c:/prompt, the only thing unusual is the config.sys file shows a date two year in the future.. Any idea how I can get my ssytem working.. Hopefully, I've provided enough info.

Reply: (edit)Using your boot disk, delete the config.sys and config.bak files, which have probably been created when the system date was incorrect

Reply: (edit)Ken maybe right but....The best thing to do is boot into Safe Mode and Uninstall Anypoint Home Network and re-boot. Check the state of Windows...Is it working right? Should be...check the website of your hardware mfg to see abou latest drivers for Win ME and install them. Lemme Know

Reply: (edit)I am unable to boot to safe mode..The same thing happens.. Also, suspecting a virus, I tried to use the Mcafee boot disk to scan files.. After 2 hours of churning, I shut it down..it appeared to get hung up.. Also did a full scandisk including surface scan.. and found no problems there.. Thanks for any advice you can give.. I'll try deleting the config files..

Reply: (edit)If you can't boot into Safe mode you got real problems. I suggest the easiest way might be to format your drive(s) and re-install Windows. By formating you will be sure to wipe out any Virus. Deleting the config files probably won't help...Safe mode bypasses these files by default.

Reply: (edit)If you suspect a virus, first boot into DOS and review your autoexec.bat and Remark out any unusual entries. You did not mention that you had SHUTDOWN or just restarted your machine. A Shutdown and power off of the system will remove a virus stored in RAM. A reboot may not. But it seems more likely that a bad or Non Windows ME driver is the cause, and has made an invalid entry in your autoexec and sysini files. Good luck, reformatting is the easiest way if you are sure that it is the last ditch effort, try everything else first. As a tech, we don't see losing data as an option for every problem.
