Hi. I recently aquired Windows ME. I am planning to upgrade from Windows 98. Currently I have Red Hat 6.2 set up as dual boot. LILO is stored on my Primary DOS partition (hda). It I install Windows ME, will I need to worry about LILO messing up? Windows ME isn't Real-Mode, will this mess it up?

ME will change the mbr, and you wont have the option to boot into linux. You can always reinstall linux after Win.

Will I need to un-install linux before I intall ME, or will ME simply overwrite the Master Boot Record, and ignore my linux drive completely?

If I do need to uninstall linux can anyone suggest the best way to go about removing LILO from my MBR on hda? Will a simple "fdisk /mbr" from DOS do the trick? Linux.org suggested the following command as root... "dd if /boot/boot.0300 of=/dev/hda bs=446 count=1" I did that and my system locked at start-up on "LI" that once was "LILO boot:" Needless to say, that sucked and I had to re-install red hat to boot to Windows 98 again. Can anyone help me sort this mess out????

Thanx!

A simle fdisk /mbr will work. Then load Win Me. You will then have to reinstall LILO or just reinstall Linux (easier).

Just To make one final clarification...

What exactly does fdisk /mbr do? I know it changes partition information, but to what? How will I know it is putting the correct partition info?

I'm scared, It would take me days to back up all of my stuff.

Thanx

For those of you who may come upon this post string in attempt to diagnose your own problem....

I did "fdisk /mbr" as suggested. What it does it wipe your MBR clean and boot to the resident operating system. IT WORKS... YAY!
I'm now running Windows ME, werkz fine!

I have a Windows ME stock PC. I tried to install Linux (Mandrake Linx4win actually) and it hosed my system. Wouldn't boot to windows anymore, wouldn't boot to Linux nothing. It was supposed to modify my startup files to give me the boot option. No dice. I HOSED my PC. I had to reinstall Windows and throw the Mandrake CD out the window. So Beware!
