i bought an eMachine back in jan 2001 with ME installed...it's always run really slow and i should have returned it. i kinda was hoping to uninstall ME and put in 98 with hopes it'd work but i just read it won't :( any suggestions on speeding things up or are eMachines and windows ME just not compatible?
thanks :o)

Kath,

Would have to know more about your e-machine. How much RAM does it have? CPU? What are you doing when you say it is slow: running Word, or surfing the net, etc. Define slow?

There should be a solution to your problem, if you provide a few specifics.

Kath, just FYI. I have an E machine Celeron 400 with just 64 megs. It had 98 imstalled originally and my SIL put on ME instead. It runs just fine and seems fast to me. (Bumble bees can't fly either!) Anyway, fast enough. Perhaps you have too many things running in the background? Too many things at startup?

kath, a friend of mine has an emachine with winme on it. If yours is like hers, it is totally set up for shopping. We went into msconfig and unchecked all the shopping junk...
Make a system restore point called "before msconfig" or something you can remember.

Start
Run
type msconfig in the box
Choose Startup
You can then uncheck everything BUT ScanRegistry and System Tray...I leave a checkmark in two Load Power Profiles, most of my ntivirus...autoprotect with mine; and my ensoniq mixer (which comes back on its own anyway). Anything you uncheck by mistake can be rechecked later as the entries stay in there anyway.

Hit Apply
Hit OK
Restart
Do a disk cleanup and a defrag and see if that does not help you out.
Good Luck

I was just going to mention this.. It might have been your response topaz that i remember reading about emachines being "buy me" appliances. A clean install with a real OS would be best but your taking a chance on finding drivers for your hardware that are windows 98 compatible.
