Hello,

My hard deive was just replaced and now I get a box when I turn on the computer asking me to type in a user name and password to log on to Windows. I never got this before. How can I get rid of it.
Also, I tried to move some of the icons on my desktop and I cannot move them. How can I move the desktop icons around on my desktop?

Thank You

DISABLING WINDOWS LOGON PASSWORD REQUEST

To be able to move the icons, you need to enable the "drag & drop" feature,or "unlock desktop icons,I believe, but for the life of me I can't remember where the heck it is!Haven't been on ME for quite some time. Some kind soul will come along shortly to clear it up,I'm sure.

Right click on your desktop and select "arrange icons".

He doesn't want to "auto arrange" them,he wants to manually move (drag & drop) them, the way I understand it.

lnjr,

That's right-click the desktop, go Arrange Icons > click Auto Arrange

(that's if, Auto Arrange has a check mark in front of it)

Good Luck

TheKid,
I think, that's what sodak was referring to:-)

Hello,

Thanks for the info on getting rid of the window login. I will try that. It's just strange. because when I first got the computer (about 3 years ago) I never got that login window but now that the new hard disk drive was installed it has appeared.

As for the inability to move the icons or drag and drop anything else. I did try what you have suggested to no avail. Oddly enough though, later on it simply began working all by itself. Very odd.

Thanks for the Help!

Hello Again,

I did try as suggested on the link to get rid of the user name & passwork login box upon startup.

However, when I went to Control Panel, launch the Network applet it is already set to “Windows Logon.”

In the Passwords applet it is already set to “All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings.”

I am running windows ME if that is of any help.

Thanks again.

lnjr,

Try this, Start, Settings, Control Panel, Passwords, Change Windows Password.. (button)

Type the old password, and leave the other two blank. Click OK

If you do get a login prompt, after this. Click OK, and it shouldn't return.

Good Luck

Hello,

I did go to passwords and the box that pops up has just the one tab - user profiles.
the option - all users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings.

The pop up box for the login when I first start the computer does not have any user name or password typed in and I never entered one. I just keep hitting the cancel button everytime I start my computer.

Any other suggestions would be Greatly Appreciated.

Thanks

lnjr,
:-)

The reason why, you can't change the password, is because you haven't made one yet.

Ok lnjr, by chance does it say something on that login popup. Like, if you leave the password empty, and click OK. You wont be prompted for a password at startup. :-) I think, I said something to that affect in my last post. Just put anything in User Name:, and leave the password box empty. Then click OK. It shouldn't come back.

You're Welcome,
I’ll Try

To avoid a "log-on name/password" when prompted simply click on CANCEL. When you get to the main screen go to start-settings-taskbar-advanced-and UNCHECK DISPLAY LOGOFF.
Since your in the correct place look down a bit futher into the TASKBAR SECTION check BOTH boxes there. TA-DA sheesh.
For the record there is no "security type" logon to windows in windows me because if someone wants on the machine as I said all ya have to do is click on CANCEL and their in/on your computer. There is no cure for that PERIOD.
If your smart you'll not change the
"In the Passwords applet it is already set to “All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings.”
Area unless you have more people useing the computer and desire their own set of blah blah blah everything. I urge you to avoid useing the "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORK" keep it on Windows. I havent the time to explain at the moment, and you probally wont be checking back at yer post anyways. Hope this helped. C-YA!
Oops ment to say also no user name or password is nessary as Windows ME will just use the "default" and or "all-user's" your better off leaveing it just like that!

For the true record, you are wrong xcks. That's if you know how to set it up. But, you're the intelligent one, you know this xcks.

"To avoid a "log-on name/password" when prompted simply click on CANCEL"

That's not avoiding it (log-in popup). That just circumvented the password. But, if you want to, you can make that unavoidable. You will have to enter a password, or windows will NOT load(start)

Sorry JW, had too

Hello,

Just want to say thank you for your assistance. However, the steps that actually resolved my problem / got rid of the logon box were as follows (just in case someone else has the same problem)
I went to start/search/files & folders.
Entered *.pwl in the search term (advanced options - search subfolders)
When "FIND" found the .pwl files I deleted the one titled 000.pwl.
I restarted Windows and there was a different password box. I entered my name, but I did not enter a password. Clicked on OK and Windows completed the startup.
Now when I start up my computer I no longer get any type of password/logon boxes.

Thanks for your assistance.
