Updates from Microsoft Updates will not install, although programs from other sites or CDs will install. Is there a special Windows Install Engine? If so, how do I find out if I have it, and if I do, then how do I find if it is working properly? If I don't have one or if the one I have is corrupt, where can I download one that works? I appreciate any help. thanks.

I believe there is a needed plug-in that would be installed for the Windows Update site. In my downloaded programs folder I have referance to one for the Windows Update site, its described as an activex control ,windows update engine >http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/R1044/V31Controls/x86/mil/en/actsetup.cab version 5,4,5440,0 ? This is what is listed as I stated in my downloaded programs folder its listed a CV3 ? Hope this helpd i would go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and do a search o the info I provided ? Or simply look for info on whats neede in order for the update site to work !
Good Luck Nick

The Windows update engine works best with Internet Explorer rather than other browsers for a start, so if you are using another browser, don't. Secondly, turn off firewall and anti-virus controls after you are on the Microsoft site but before you start the update, because some of these programs prevent the update engine from working. Don't forget to turn them back on immediately after the update has taken place.

I appreciate both of you trying to help. Unfortunately, I still can't get the darn things to install. I have tried everything that I can think of as well as many fine recommendations from others. I am now at the point of thinking of upgrading to XP. I expect that would solve my problem, but what other problems would then lurk around the corner? Thanks, again.

You should be able to go to the C:\Program Files\ folder and delete the hidden "WindowsUpdate" folder. Then try again. The problem happens if you have the real old update modules and there is a problem when the new Windows Update site downloads the new version. Some of the work and history files left over are not compatible.
