Windows folder view settings problem

Specs: Windows Me, P4/256
My folders are not remebering their view settings. The icon arrangements and view keep changing. I like my icons to be set in alphabetical order with the large icons view but it randomly changes to date view and the icons go offscreen and I need top use the scrollbar and I really don't like this. It didn't use to do this until several months ago. I can't find a solution for it.

I'd rather not reinstall Windows (when you have that many files, it's a big hassle), but I could. I also suspect that this problem is because of the number of folders I have so reinstalling wouldn't do me any good.

I've been reading things (for xp) (BagMRU) that says that you can add a registry key that will expand the folder view cache from 200 folders and network folders up to 2000 or 4000 or something like that. But I can't find any way to do this for Windows 98/ME

I also read something about "Windows Stream MRU" and something at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams (or StreamMRU) but there's nothing in that key and I couldn't find any hint of what to add there.

I do know about the "max cached icons" registry fix under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer but I can't find something like this to increase the folder view settings cache.

Resetting the folders' view settings or clicking "like this folder" under "folder options" "view" tab TEMPORARILY works and I even unchecked and rechecked "remember folder view settings" and to no avail.

What would happen to be the registry key or something like that (preferably something that doesn't require a 3rd party program) to fix this for Windows ME?

I have over 3000 folders on my computer as well. Oddly enough, the desktop retains it's settings, it's only a problem with Windows Explorer.

I cannot just delete my folders as I have files in them and I need them organized.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. The offscreen folders issue is present in both maximized and minimized folders.

It's a perennial problem with Windows (full stop). There ARE fixes, partial or otherwise for XP and Vista, but not W2000, W98, ME & W95. The reason the desktop retains its setting is that it's always refreshed when you boot, remains on view, and so goes to the top of the MRU (most recently used) list.

There isn't usually a problem if you potter about in a few folders - they always go to the top od the list.

I'm using W2000 (mostly) and just put up with it, but II use a third-party utility when reorganising/moving many files in many folders. Such programs use a global order and don't try to remember each folder's settings.

I use Total Commander, which has a double-pane layout, and lots of functions that aren't even a gleam in Microsoft's eye. It isn't shareware/freeware, but you could probably find a similar (though less-featured) prog. on the 'net.
