Thanks Bob
I have trawled through both links.
Now thoroughly confused.
Should I leave it or delete it ?
No evident effect (+ or -) on the running of my system but as threads demonstrate it does trigger at boot is running and appears in my programmes list
P.S. I keep looking at your 'if it aint broke leave it alone' tag that said I did not ask for the programme it just installed itself during an 'update'

The damn thing messed up my computer. Was in startup items, and caused blue screen errors.
Couldn't get anything done on computer. I unchecked the KB891711 in msconfig, re-started and everything worked ok again.

kb891711.exe appeared on my machine after using the microsoft update site. Of the three updates I downloaded, this one caused my machine to "freeze" just after the desktop loaded and before all of the icons in the "System Tray" appeared. The system TOD clock stopped running, as well. I had to disable kb891711. My Win98 must not like it, I have a system file that doesn't like it, or one of my applications doesn't like it. Anyway it says, " I'm not going to work and you can't make me."

Here are two pages on the Microsoft site talking about this patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-002.mspx
and
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8850954D-57D9-4D23-9AA1-1CCF6085A057&displaylang=en

I suggest not disabling this security patch.

You will have to read the FAQs on those pages to see tht application to Win ME.

TO CHIPMT - If the patch is causing you problems it is probably not the patch itself, but rather some other things you have running that you either don't need or that need to be updated. Go to the following URL and follow their procedure. Scroll about halfway down that page to the "The Programs" section and download the zipped file, "Full List Zip". It contains every program that can start during boot that there is (100s) with an explination of what is needed or not, etc.

Good luck

I have a utility on my pc, "end it all", and this file showed up. I unchecked it in msconfig, then went to add/remove and removed it from there, then deleted my temp files, ran full maintenence and all is well.

Hi
Having had far more BSOD on my ME system recently I too have just noticed this update in my "programs running" box. I have just tried unticking this program from the MSCONFIG screen so it no longers loads up. But I have just had another BSOD! Do you need to remove it completely from add/remove to stop it affecting the system, or could the BSOD be caused by something else? Until this last month or so I only had very few BSOD and have not added or removed anything from my computer for ages and run a virus software.

Any ideas?

cheers

I too have recently installed the KB891711 update for Win98 (4.10.2222) off the MS update site, and every so often on shutdown I keep getting good old General Exception 0E (BSOD) on shutdown. I think it is something to do with the KB... update and am thinking about disabling it, but its supposed to be a vulnerability patch for Windows.

I am unsure what to do as my Pentium 200MMX (I know!!) doesnt take too nicly to anti-viruses and the like, I recently installed AVG but the load on my system was so severe it was worse that every spyware trojan ever being active.

What is the lesser of the two evils?

Does anyone know of a good antivirus that wont put extra 40MB load on my system, just for being there???

Thx, kemikalyst

I had same experience a Response Number 5 & 6. Wasted a whole sunny weekend after downloading security patch (& Direct X upgrade) then trying to resolve how to get system to stop giving me "fatal exception O6" every time I went into windows,!!! And, because PC would only start in safe mode, could not get on to web to get help. Only at 7 pm on the Sunday did I think of looking at the start up on another PC, saw the KB89711 was not there, so disabled it & magic I was back on line!.

Hi
I went into safe mode & removed this program. But I am still getting BSOD when surfing the net! This has only been an issue in this last week or so. Yet I have not added anything or removed anything from my computer for months. Any ideas, or is it time for reformat?

cheers

I have had many blue screens recently on shutdown. Startup also began giving problems. (I use basic W98)
Started up in safe mode and disabled a number of programs in MSCONFIG and low and behold, no more problems. Discovered by elimination that re-checking the box against "KB891711" led immediately to more blue screens, after re-starting.
I would be very interested to learn about a fix. Seems this MS update does address security issues and I will need to do something about it, eventually?

I have three HDD's, C,D,& E. Nortons one button checkup diagnosed E, then D, but would not scan C, stating that another disk utility was running on C and that I needed to disable this utility for Nortons to work there. Using ctrl-alt-del I found that I have the Kb891711 file installed. Is this file possibly causing the problem with Nortons? I wasn't aware of this program before and believe it was installed with the last MS Critcal Update. I read somewhere to never go there, sounds like they may be right.

Same here guys ,after going to the Windows Update site and installing this security patch ,I started having problems with my P3 750MHZ 256M.B.SDRAM O/S WinMe. I noticed this update running in background when I opened Program Manager , when I tried closing it down with the P/M ,my PC froze up ,radom errors and B.S.O.D. ? I disabled it thru the MSCONFIG startup tab and so far no problems .If I find as long as it does not efeect the performance of my PC when disabled, I may not bother to uninstall it, who knows what Microsoft did ,to make uninstalling this patch take with it ? I always forget some advice I recieved when I frist starting using my PC ,keep it simple ,and if it aint broke dont fix it! I have no doubt that microsoft wants to push all Win98 users and WinMe users to upgrade to XP,B/4 next O/S comes out, then they will want you to throw out XP for that one ! Come on Bill, how much $ does one man need !
Happy Easter ,Nick

I have spoken to Microsoft at length. There is a
known problem with this security patch. The real fix comes in 1 months time! Unbelievable. Microsoft really messed up. The left over exe,
which in set in runservices in the registry, will likely cause the machine to fail as all the users above have indicated. In addition other Microsoft application may fall over e.g. excel, and you may get blue screen, or icons not functioning.

The Microsoft workaround is to use Msconfig to disable the exe, but I prefer to remove directly from the registry. Microsoft blame firewalls and anti-virus but I have tested without firewalls and anti-virus and still get same problem. You always have the option to remove the patch but having removed the executable, machines appear to work fine.
