I have the Windows ME OS. When I open Windows Explorer, I am unable to see the Hierarchy Pane window on the left side that lists all the drives and folders. I have tried everything I could think of to make this window pane come up to no avail. I tried clicking on view, than on Explorer Bar, and then I put a check next to Folders. When I click on folders, I get a pane on the left side that is totally gray with nothing in it except an (X) in the upper right hand corner that when clicked on, only closes the left pane. Does anyone know what I can do to have the left pane show the list of folders that are in my C Drive?
Thanking you in advance, I remain, sincerely, Phil

I tried the suggestion as listed. Unfortunately, this did not do the trick. I still wind up with a gray box in the left pane where the folders should be listed.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Phil

I just upgraded my granddaughter's Windows 98 SE to IE 6.0 and have exactly the same problem with the left pane of Windows Explorer. This happened several months ago with my computer. I didn't relate it to IE 6.0 then, but that's about the time I did that upgrade. I finally did find a setting that fixed the problem, but I can't remember how! There IS a fix; anyone out there remember where?

I've got the same problem - the left hand-pane is there but blank. I've also tried everything I can think of to no avail. TweakUI doesn't seem to help.
If Robert can remember how he fixed it, I'd be really grateful

Ken, I still can't remember what I did before, but I removed IE 6.0 from Kayle's Windows 98SE system and installed IE 5.5. Windows Explorer now works right again--but Windows Product Updates now won't install! Ah, Microsoft----. IE 6.0 seems to be a real poison pill for Win 9.x!

It seems like you've messed-up Internet Explorer. If the left pane is GREY, then that's got nothing to do with Folder-Options and Restore-Defaults. Something's is NOT right with Internet Explorer (the Web-browser). I suggest you get or download a copy of Internet Explorer and re-install it. It may also be clever/easier to you just upgrade you Internet Explorer to version 6, but you may just re-install your current version if you know what it is.

Hi all,
Just solved the "all folder" pane being greyed out by using the repair option you get when going through the "control panel / add remove softawre / MS-IE 6 .." path.
It solved THAT pbm; but not all the other misc glitches ...
That's FYI in case it can help someone
Laurent
