Hello,
I have the same problem too ! All I can tell is not a windows issue nor IE... I'm stil digging to find out what's about with this image.dll. I really want to avoid a format !
I somebody of you succeded, please advice how.
Many thanksHello world!
hi guys:
i had the same problem, and after hours and hours of investigation i got the solution, in my case was a virus infection from a trojan horse that installed spyware and changed some things in the registry related to IE like the home page, and search bar. the first step to eliminate the message was to download and run the anti-spyware cwshredder 1.49.1, you can find it and download it at: http//www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html.
i hope that running this tool will fix the problem, also you shoul check microsoft updates page for a patch against this spyware, good luck and let me know if this solution worked for you.
It is absolutely true. It is a trojan horse and ordinary antivirus programs cannot catch it. The best is to download cwshredder now version 1.50 it will take care of the problem.
To delete this message do Next
Goto START and type REGEDIT <enter>
make next tree
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windos\CurrentVersion|RunOn the right you'll find
image REG_SZ rundll32 c:\Windows\image.dll,installdelete image.dll,install
I have the same problem, however, I ran cwshredder and the message still appears. Any thoughts?
And after CWS this is where I found the problem and modifing the registry worked for me...
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run
On the right you'll find:
image REG_SZ rundll32 c:\Windows\image.dll,installmodify/delete image.dll,install
For Life and the Living !
In the registry I did not find
c:\Windows\image.dll,install
in the directories that have been mentioned above.
However, if you go into regedit as explained above, but this time go to the edit menu and find,
just type in image.dll and click find and where ever it is found just delete the contents.
The first edit did not get it ( by itself ), but by doing the second it is now gone. Thanks, you two!

Thanks a lot for this valuable info.
It worked well for my problem on W2K.
Trouble started with mssearch.dll and continously strange IE Homepage.Used SPYBOT 1.2, cannot count the reboots anymore, finally renamed c:\winnt\image.dll and ended up with rundll message.
Tks & good luck everybody

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run
It works! its better to go to the regedit and delete this file, than installing another software. its just a pain to keep so many types of softwares, cause theres always a new version or a better one out there. i also just wanted to say thanks to everyone for posting there remarks, it really helped me get this pain out of my computer. (dont u just hate the error sound DUNG!!!)
Hi, I had this problem and put my computer in our local shop to be fixed and they found that trojan horse virus. However i still can't get on the internet. The only thing i can work out is that i am using windows XP and not ME.
I've tried doingHKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run
but when i go into policies, i haven't got an explorer one all i've got is Nonenum, Ratings and system and none of these have got the image.dll file, but i am using XP.
Can someone please help me as i'm starting to pull my hair out. Thanks.
The c:\Windows\image.dll,install file is the dll the Trojan installs. On deleting the Trojan you delete this file, but the registry value still remains, that’s why you need to also delete that! It will be found in either two of the registry locations mentioned above, depending what OS you have. The best way, as someone else mentioned, is to search the registry for the image.dll, install key and delete from the location you find it. If you download Bazooka Spyware Scanner software it actually tells you how to manually delete all of the adware/spyware out there.
You have to disable to computer to replicate the virus or the worm before using any shredder or regedit it.
Gentlemen
Thanks too much for all.
With your help i have fixed the error.
I find the CWShredder 1.53.2 version at:http://www.softpedia.com/public/scripts/downloadhero/10-17-150
Muito agradecido pela ajuda

First download and run CWShredder from here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe
(click the "Fix" button when you run it)Close all your windows, click fix, reboot and then it should never bother you again.
In the likely event of an escapee...panic

I am hoping that this deceptive web posting and any other misleading postings will be removed.
I followed "leorock's" suggestion on the CW Shredder and it worked great - the current version is 1.53.4 but the download link is still good, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4086 .
Thanks for the help.
Hi Sonic D. HEdgehog nice to meet you !

I had this prompt on start-up apearing twice. I did not know what everyone was talking about so I had to figure it out! So here is how I corrected it in Win XP: Goto start and find the "run" icon and type "regedit", after that a new screen will pop up and show you some folders, go to the upper left and open the following folders in this order: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windos\CurrentVersion|Run
In the Run folder you will find "Windows\image.dll,install" right click it and delete it.
Next, at the top menu of the same folder goto "edit", then "find" and type "image.dll,install". If you find it again, right click and delete that too, your problem should be solved.
Oh- and remember...."The Matrix has you"
