Im trying to upgrade to Windows 2000 but Im having a problem an error pop up and says "The option to upgrade will not be avalibe because the setup was unable to load the file "C:\Windows\UpgDlls\w95upg.dll\Win9xUPG\W95UPG.DLL"
What does this mean..how can I make the setup work..help

Im not familiar with that error but Windows 2000 is not within the windows me upgrade path.
Windows 2000 was released before windows me and windows 2000 setup wont recognize winme as qualifying software when your using a 2000 upgrade disk in a clean install.
It is possible to upgrade to 2000 when windows me is already installed. My guess is this is because windows me came out after 2000 and 2000 doesnt know to exclude it.
Some claim it works just fine but others experience nightmares down the road.

As SMUOD stated Windows 2000 was released prior to WinME and is not supported.
WinME to Win2000 Upgrade not supported
I did find some info on your error with a work around. I have never tried it so I cannot vouch for it personally but here it is.
I would do one thing different than mentioned in the link. Rename the .dll files mentioned to .old instead of deleting them. If you still have a problem you could then also rename them back.

Even if you can upgrade from ME to 2000, I wouldnt recommended, theres nothing better than a clean and fresh install of Windows 2000/with service patch 2 or 3.
Also remember that as said before, Windows 2000 came out after ME, so the upgrade may not pick up everything as an upgrade should be, may be OK if you only run a very basic ME, but if you have many programs installed and using newer hardware, the upgrade path could easily tirn to jello.
If you decided you wish to proceed and have found the way to, I would strongly suggest you take a backup, either just the important data files or a total image using Ghost or Drive Image.

Hi,
Having been thru the process myself here are your options:
1) Install new version of Win2000 on a separate hard drive and you will be able to boot into either operating system - this is the most effective method since you can't upgrade directly from ME to 2000 but you can have both on separate partitions.
2) Choose to either keep ME or install clean 2000.
The error message you got is for one of two reasons. Firstly is that the DLL file stated in the error message is not included on the full version CD, only on the upgrade, and secondly as the guys above said, if you look on the box or in the manual it does clearly state you cannot use an upgrade CD to upgrade from ME to 2000.
Your best bet is to have a dual boot if you want to keep WinME, or go for a clean install having backed up all your drivers -a good program for this is WinDriverExpert, available free at
http://www.mesich.com/files/WinDrvExpert.zipMake sure you take a while to download correct driver files for Win2000 though as some are different to ME versions.
If you need further advice mail me...
Hope this helps,
Mark
