I am trying to reinstall Window ME. The setup begins to run from the CD-ROM, then I am runniing in to this message and I don't know what to do:
"Setup cannot create files on your startup drive for Window ME. If you have HPFS or Windows NT file system, you need to create an MS-DOS boot partition. If you have LANtastic server or SuperStor compression, disable it before running setup. For more information, see the section on installing on a clean computer in setup.txt on the Windows ME Edition CD-ROM."Also, I cannot seem to get into the setup.txt file that the above mentions.
I don't have a previous version of Windows on this computer. I believe that my hard drive is partitioned and formatted correctly.

The setup.txt is located on the cd-rom. In order to take a look at it, you need to type:
edit x:\setup.txt
at an a:\> prompt where "x" is the drive letter of your cd-rom.Or... here it is from the microsoft knowledgebase.
I still think you need to repartition and reformat using a 98 or ME bootdisk. Setup does not think you have a FAT partition.

It can be either FAT32 or FAT16, but there is a 2GB limit to partition size in FAT16 and you would be wasting a lot of space. It's old technology... use FAT32.
Start over.
If you don't have one, download a 98 or ME bootdisk image from bootdisk.com and extract it to a clean formatted floppy.Put it in and boot up to it.
At the a:\> prompt type:
fdiskThe first thing you will see is a question... a large rambling question... but a question none the less. It is asking you if you want to use FAT16 or FAT32. If you answer "NO", then you get FAT16. If you answer "YES", then you get FAT32.
Say YES.
Delete any existing partitons in this order:
Logical
Extended
Primary.Recreate new partitons in this order:
Primary
Extended
Logical.Set the primary DOS partition active.
Exit FDISK.
Reboot.
At the a:\> prompt type:
fromat c:
to format the primary.Reboot when finished(not a necessary step, but it's generally a good idea).
This time choose cd-rom support. Pay attention to what DOS thinks your cd-rom drive letter is.
At the a:\> type:
x:\setup.exe
with the ME cd in and "x" as the drive letter of your cd rom.You should be able to install from there.
Once you get up, you will be able to format any other partitions you created from within Windows... as long as they were assigned a drive letter. That is why you have to create logical drives in the extended partitions... to give the unformatted space a drive letter.

I want to install windows me in my logical drice d.The drive is formatted. But the cd first scans and report thaen that it cannot install in c drive bur I want to install in the extend logical drive(partition). What should I do ?
