ive recently noticed that i have a swap file icon on my drive c which takes up 230mb..ive tried to delete it but get message file is in use what is this swap file lark....wasnt there a week ago...im runnin windows me..any help would be appreciated

the swap file is needed to run your OS... what are your computer specs?... if you have less than 128 meg RAM buy another increase your RAM (get at least another 128) and use "Conservative Swap File Usage=1) and set fixed swap file min = max Regards

Hey Win386.swp is a temporary file not needed, but to delete it you need to boot on a startup disk to a command prompt then find it in the C:\windows directory 1) Boot to command prompt without loading windows 2)cd\windows (ENTER) 3) del win386.swp doing this before disk defragmenting is good! yes... you can delete swap file, but it will be recreated again after rebooting the computer..... the swap file can be also disabled completely (but it is not recomended because it is needed to handle the need for the RAM that the physical memory can not handle)... the use of slow virtual memory (swap file) can be limited by having enough physical ram and by using "conservative swap file usage=1) and it can be speeded up by preventing its fragmentation when setting min value the same as max value Regards
