I have been trying to download updates and IE 6 on my daughter's computer . The IE 6 will download, but not install.
At the update site, I get the message that
"The Windows Update software did not update successfully. Below are some suggestions to help you proceed: You may have clicked No when prompted to accept the Trust Certificate. To allow the Windows Update site software to install, click Yes when presented with the Security Warning dialog box. Your Internet Explorer security settings may be set too high. To install the updated software and access Windows Update, Internet Explorer security must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the download and initialization of ActiveX controls must be enabled"
I think these should be okay, but still doesnt work. Any suggestions?

Verify that you do not have System Restore disabled. Some of the updates will not install if it is disabled.
Try doing only one update at a time. Start with the Critical Security updates first. Make sure you install the Automatic Updates fix and the System Restore fix if not already installed.
With only 64MB of memory, you also need to stop any programs like MS Office. It is also recommended to disable your Anti-Virus program while downloading. And after getting the most important Security fixes installed, it is recommended to disable any software firewall.
Your problems could also be caused by Malware programs running hidden on the system. If not done, run a manual AV scan and scans for Adware/Spyware programs.

I cant even get to the point to find out what updates are needed. Nothing else is running at that time. I have done AV and Ad ware/spyware scans. Thanks

Could you walk us through, where you downloaded this, and what you did.
If it's what I think it is, and you're using a fire wall. You need to give access to the setup, to do the install, or to download the IE install package.
In your IE security settings under "ActiveX controls and plug-ins", what do you have "Enabled"? Also, in IE security settings under "Scripting", is "Active scripting" "Enabled"?
In internet options, Advanced (Tab), under "Security", is "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" checked? At the same place "Security". List/tell us if any others that start with "Use" are checked.
In your/her
c:\windows\downloaded program files
folder. Does anything have a status of unknown, problem? Look for an "Update Class", what is its status, if present.Does she have/use AOL?

I will check those things when I get back to her house over the weekend. They do not have AOL but the kids use AOL IM.
Thanks

Why are you installing IE 6.0? Personally, I recommend 5.5 for Windows ME and I find it runs better on ME systems. 6.0 has no java support and you will need to install that separately
http://java.sun.com/j2se/

I stayed with 5.5 SP2 and my system is very stable. When I.E ver6 frist came out ,I was reading alot of post from others having probs with ver6 and WindowsMe ! Figured if it aint broke dont fix it, still using 5.5 now and no probs!
Good Luck Nick

Update Class is present. I'm not sure how to check the status, but I "updated" all the entries there.
I am not especially concerned about the IE 6, but would like to be able to check for other updates that might be needed. Thanks for all the help. Patsy

IE 6.0 freezing up during the installation?
You might want to check to make sure that you don't have a bunch of (0 kb) oem*.inf files.
They can generally cause a problem with any update. Go to start search for files and folder. Then type search for oem*.inf.
You'll want to make your that you have the option to view hidden files and folders on.
If that is the problem you will problably have upwards of 15,000 of them in your c:\windows\inf folder.Just delete all the (0 kb) ones and try to run the ie 6.0 setup again.

Hello Patsy, everyone,
"Update Class is present. I'm not sure how to check the status, but I "updated" all the entries there"
Don't know how you have the "view" set, for the folder, so, do this. Right-click an open/blank area in the folder's window. Then View > Details click Details. If 'Status' isn't one of the things displayed, right click..... Just do it the simple way ;-) The way I 'think' you "updated" them. Right-click it, and then click 'Properties'. On the 'General' (Tab), you will have a
