I have a P3, 1ghtz, 256mbram... funnily I have never had any problems with win me (going to get xp though) until a few days ago...I have the power settings to always on and turn monitor off after 15 mins. The problem is after the monitor goes off the computer wont come back on.I have to cold boot.It only happens intermittently. Should I have the turn off monitor setting to never and wait for winxp? or is there some way to fix this?
Thanks for any replies.

Thanks EMM I'll try that. Is it ok for the monitor to be left on all the time? I do alot of downloading and leave my computer while its happening.

If ONLY the monitor goes off you should have no problem. Sounds like the hard drive is shutting down and/or it's going into standby and/or hibernate.

My screen saver comes on after 15 minutes; after 30 minutes the screen and HD both shut down. Normally, that's OK; like your system, mine doesn't wake up once in a while, but that's after a very long time with no activity. Sometimes I get a message saying something like "your system could not recover from standby; disable standby?" I always say yes.

The damned thing is never consistent. Right now, the screen saver comes on, the screen and hard drive shut down; and usually it comes back to life.

Why would you want to keep your hard drive running if you're not using it? Or your monitor? Brsides higher power consumption, what about the wear and tear?

For the few times it doesn't work, I live with it. I suggest you do the same, unless someone has a real solution -- besides leaving everything on all the time. Which is avoiding the problem, not solving it.

That is what I thought as well. I dont use a screen saver or turn off the hard drive because I'm using it off and on throughout the day...but when the monitor turned off nothing would resume it is like its in standbye/hybernation even after a short time. Thanks for your reply.

If the change in settings doesn't fix the problem, you ought to check for BIOS updates. That is what fixed my system when it had similar problems.

Hi Sue,
I had similar problems once.
In My case, it was because I disabled the 'LoadPowerProfile' In the startup-list...
See if that works.

Hope this helps
Johan

Hi Sue.

The suggestions above are good. However, there is no need to update the BIOS. You can turn off the ME hybernation in the BIOS except in the some of the newest (and maybe oldest) motherboards.

You can find it under Power or Advanced. Disable Power management or PM/apm (Do not disable APCI). Turn all settings to in Power Options to Never and and thake the check mark out of Enable Hybernate Support. Running SCREEN SAVER AND SLEEP/STANDBY/HYBERNATE in windows tends to lock systems up period.

Load Power Profile needn't be in the startup as suggested. Turn off both as there are usually 2.

FYI: The Hybernate feature in ME is tied to the motherboard and the operating system is kept in RAM by the battery on the motherboard. So you can turn the power off and the system be in standby (hybernate).

For systems that lock in hybernation and reboot to hybernation lockups (loop), you have to unplug from the power socket to force it into scandisk. Hybernate definately has issues.

Note: Don't rush out to buy XP unless you want to be one of the first to upgrade from ME. I would wait till the bugs are worked out. Above all, back up before upgrade.

Good luck!
