Comment:
My PC with Win ME won't powerdown automatically after shutdown and it restarts when i press the power button. I have tested microsofts troubleshooter with no success. I figured out that there is one way to make the PC to powerdown automatically and that is in BIOS settings to disable cpu internal cache. But this is not an acceptable solutions because the PC becomes very slow. I tested with two other processors with the same result. I also tested the processor with the Hot CPU Tester for 6 hours, this program tests the CPU, internal and external cache and memory, without any errors. So there seems to be no fault with the processor. Anyone who has an idea of what's causing this shutdown problem?

The powerdown functions normally with Win95.

It's definitely not a CPU problem...you're wasting your time in that respect. It's probably not a hardware related at all.

It's probably software. Had same problem!
Microsoft later come out with a patch that accelerated the drive speed when a shut down was initiated. That solved the problem.
Kind of reminded me of old clumker cars that shuddered when the key was turned off but if you gunned it in neutral and shut it off, it shut down smoothly.

if Windows ME won't shut down then simply press and hold the power button on the hard drive (tower)till it shuts down (usually a few seconds)

then run scan disk then defrag the drive

if you have a registery cleaner then run that as well along with ccleaner (ccleaner.com)
