Subject: win me totally messed up .. help |
Comment: I received a notice to update win me, upon that update I read that I should create a start up disk , which I did. I do not know what to do next. I have a micron pc, running win me. When I turn my system on, I am promoted to insert the start up disk.... clueless as to what I should do next. Please advise......

Reply: (edit)the update was located at the bottom right of tool bar, the one that alerts you to "click here", once I clicked I was directed to www.support.microsoft.com. From there I followed the instructions to create a start up disk, once the start up disk was created, I followed the directions to start computer w/ cd rom support, I typrd in the following: c: enter cd windows\system enter ren user32.dll user32.dix enter ren gdi32.gdi32.dix enter at this point, I rcvd message saying file not found. I really don't know DOS and the commands I was told to type, I just need help restoring my pc. I pray you can help me get it working again. by the way, there was no WIN ME cd in the box ( I believe it came pre installed) this was purchased 2 yrs ago Thank you so much for your help

Reply: (edit)Hi Again Lisa,Dont panic(yet)try to boot into safe Mode by holding down the Shift key either on a cold boot or a reboot and see what happens, hopefully if you can, you can do a system restore back before you downloaded the update.if it will boot into safe mode you will see a Help screen come up just X it out.at this point I am still not sure what update you got as I have Win Me and have not gotten an update like that.let us know, thanks.

Reply: (edit)can you start the computer without any disc in any drive?if so go ahead and try that.if not then when it gives you the option to select 1-3-3-4 etc choose start without cd support to see if you can get it to the MSDOS prompt,if you can get it that far then use the instructions i gave in response #6,the only other way is to obtain an emergengy boot disc from someone that has Win ME or someone can download one from http://support.micronpc.com/file_lib/boot.html Then use the instructions i gave in response#6

Reply: (edit)Lisa,A restore disc is different than an emergency boot disc. if you had the restore disc(s) that comes with computers from the factory it would make things a lot simpler as you could do a reformat and restore it to the condition it was in when you bought it.however not having one we must do the next best thing and that is to restore a good copy of the registry but to do it we need to get an emergency boot disc to place in the floppy drive to get to the msdos prompt,so you must somehow get an emergency boot disc, see response #8,,let me know

Reply: (edit)no you will need a boot disk, restore disk/OS (ME) CD, and either restore the computer to factory defaults or just do a "fresh" install of ME, her operating system is corrupted....mY suggestion would be to boot the pc with a boot disk and install a different operating system than ME........hope this helps at all........sorry.

Reply: (edit)I thought the same thing from the start,I know there is a microsoft download notification that is a hoax and if it is installed it will ruin your OS,this sounds like the classic case. When you get up and running Lisa be sure to disable the auto Micrisoft update.

Reply: (edit)Lisa, things look pretty grim, at this point about the only thing to do is completely clean your hard drive and re-install an operating system I.E. just start over like new.it would appear that the O.S. has corrupted beyond repair. You will need an emergensy boot disk to do the reformat and an O.S disc to re-install the O.S.It might be best to take it to a shop that does this.sorry we could not get it running but sometimes things are just beyond the repair that can be done on a forum.Good luck,,Frank

Reply: (edit)Yes I agree it was probably a cruel hoax by making you think it was a ligit download when in fact it destroyed your operating system. Some people have nothing better to do I guess.anyway good luck on getting it up and running again, when you do be sure and disable anything that auto updates and install a good anti-virus program and possibly a firewall.
