We still have not figured out the possible solution for the lack of proper shutdown when Me is installed. I tried the Clean Boot troubleshooting and came up with no clear answer. I have latest drivers and a fairly new system. In the system is:
SB live sound card
Dimond viper 2 video card
HP deskjet952 USB
HP Scanjet 3300c USB
Microsoft Mouse PS2 intellimouse explorer
Teac cdw54 CD Burner
196 meg ram ASUS board with 600 AthalonAnswer? Try pulling out your sound card and see if it shuts down. Sb cards have been causing problems. but you might want to pull all cards but video and see if you still have the problem.
I tried that and no change. All pci cards removed and the same thing, a black screen with a blinking cursor in the lower right middle of the screen and no shut down......Now what? Suggestions Please.

Did you flash your BIOS yet?? You did not say what model mother board that you have.
If you boot in safe mode then select shut down>>>>>>> If it shuts down then you have a software issue (drivers etc.)>>>>If still no shut down then your motherboard is the issue and unless a new BIOS version for your board is available you are screwed.. You might also recheck your BIOS settings change the PNPOS to NO or to YES. I keep mine on NO since I have Linux on this machine too. You might also try another power supply...barrow from another machine. Instable power supplies can be issues too.......Install Win-ME on top of itself......disable active desktop......disable power management...disable screensaver....Change the positions of your IDE devices (i.e. primary IDE to secondary IDE and visa versa)....it could be anything....depending on the Asus motherboard that you have try running with the drivers that windows supplies only then try the ones on the ASUS CDROM that came with the MB......Let us know how it goes, I'm interested since others that I know have had issues besed around Athalon systems too. I'm running an ASUS CUSL-2 and have not noticed any major issues as of yet!!

The bMotherboard is a k7v. I tried everything short of redoing all the motherboard drivers. at this point I may have to (gulp) Live with it. Everything else seems to work fine. I may have a HD change soon and try a fresh install without the win 98. If you folks come up with any other ideas...Please let me know I will be checking daily. :p)

My new Dell Dimension computer arrived the same day that Windows ME was formally released (about 9/14). After a week of use the ONLY problem I've had with it is shutdown related. A couple of times it shutdown when I hadn't even asked it to. About three other times it refused to shutdown. The first time, I had to unplug it to turn it off. Just recently I've discovered a button on my tower (just below the normal button for turning it on) which worked to force a restart (while it was hung up shutting down.) It hasn't been so bad that I've even bothered to ask Dell support about it yet. I just figure it's one of those expected bugs in a new operating system. Hopefully they will fix it with the first service pack.

If you have the Dimension 4100 there are some bug, which Dell does have BIOS fixes for; if you're using AOL with WINME it can cause some problems.

I have the same problem, but my system shutsdown OK in safe mode, the last lines in BOOTLOG are this:
Terminate = Win32
EndTerminate = Win32
EndTerminate = KERNEL

anyone knows what's wrong ???

Sounds like a bad VREDIR Static VxD driver, perform a MSCONFIG in the run program section. then click on Static VxDs tab. then uncheck the VREDIR box. Restart the computer TWICE (yes twice to take effect). then see if your shutdown is speedy and proper. if so, then you have a bad VREDIR driver. get another one and remember to recheck the box again.
good luck

I just bought an AMD 1.4 and loaded ME on it and it wount shut down but it restarts fine , I took it to the company i bought it from and he tried it and it shut down fine like 5 times, I tried changing power suply,monitor,keyboard and mouse, but in my house it wont shut down ,i used the me to look for the problem and i found this error message (network\mstcp\0000) error 22.
