Specs:
Compaq Deskpro 4000 w/ P2
4GB HD
CD-ROM & 3.5"
Ethernet card built into the motherboardI used FDISK and reformatted the HD (1 partition) to FAT32. I made a dir on C: called win9xflat and copied the win9x dir from the CD. I ran setup from C:.
Still, setup hangs during hardware and PnP detection, with somewhere between 10-18 minutes remaining in the installation. It usually gets stuck in a loop, where it searches for hardware and PnP devices; with 13 min remaining, it reboots by itself. Setup restores to 15 min remaining. When it reaches 13 min remaining, though, it reboots again. Last night I let it go on for three hours that way.
During setup, I chose to install as few options as possible, but nothing has worked so far.
HELP!

I've tried running setup.exe from the CD-ROM AND from the HD, as other posts on Computing.net have suggested. Still, no luck.
I would remove the ethernet card...if I could, but it's integrated into the motherboard. I'd install Win 98 or even 95 or NT, IF I had them. Unfortunately, an old factory-version of 95 (for an HP) and a 98 upgrade CD are all I have. I got the Compaq used with NT installed, but I don't have the NT CDs. Am I screwed?
