I recently installed this hard drive from another system, did all the right procedures to have cmos identify it.. its a 4.3 gig maxtor hard drive.. loaded fine.. works great but this is the catch it only reads the drive as a 1.09 gig hard drive ..What gives ? Seeing i no longer have the installation disk for this .. Is there any program that will partition or find partitions and unite it into one without the loss of my files or wiping the system ?? or anything i can do to change this.. HELLPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!

Hey mike.. Yes, i dod the auto detection in cmos and in the bios it is registered as a 4.3 drive.. yet in win me im only seeing 1.09 .. with 200 megs to spare.. Suprising isnt it ? Unless im on the show punk'd.. What do i do ?

Mechanix.. I do know of the f disk utility.. but what im a bit apprehensive about is i am aware using that program wipes your hard drive clean .. Not good when i dont have the original Win ME disc anymore.. So i want to keep everything i have on here intact while gaining back the other 3 gigs in drive space.. Would this work ? and does Windows millenium edition even have a boot (start up) disk ?

Fdisk can (and is) used nondestructively to show 'status' - - fear not

??
It's a good idea to make one, but you should be able to open a DOS "window" in WinME and run the command, without having to resort to a floppy startup
Computers in the future may have only 1,000 vacuum tubes and perhaps only weigh 1 1/2 tons.

Alright fdisk has an option called partition information.. Good thing i was able to locate the mysterious vanishing 3 gigs.. In stead of fdisk status i used fdisk form boot disk under the option of show partition information and this is what i got
partition Status Type mbytes System Useage
c:1 A pri dos 1122 fat32 27%
2 ext dos 2996 73%Well it shows where the missing 3 gigs went ..question is how can i make it all one drive without sacrifcing what i have on the 1.09 gig partition drive already cause i dont have a copy of Windows ME anymore or how i can make the other partition show up in windows ME I think its also fair to know.. In case its important.. I transplatned this drive with os and all from another computer.. In the current one it calls home, it has 2 cd roms cd rom unit is using D and the cdrw is using the letter E.. does this have any significance .. I need help badly.. also is there any other software that can do this other then fdisk so i dont have to dump whatever is on the drive or reload anything ?

You can not "merge" the existing DOS partition and the space in the extended partition with fdisk.
That can only be done with a 3rd party utility.
What I recommend is for you to create a logical drive in the extended partition.
That way, you don't lose what you have on C: and you get to use the whole 4GB.
Be aware that the logical drive will be assigned letter D so your two CDs will "slide" to [most likely] E & F.
For planning purposes you may want to give some thought to acquiring an ME CD [better yet, a 98SE CD] so that when the day comes that you need to reinstall, you'll be ready.

thanks mechanic .. Awesome so that would the select logical dos drive then under fdisk and could i access it under windows? ..in otherwords would it be operational under ME and not dos ? Silly question but im a noce at this.. Also is there some file viewer i could download that look at the partition before i fdisk ?

The short answer is YES, ME will see logical drives in the extended partition.

I also have ME, but I have a Hard Disk that is 20GB (again - a Maxtor). When I formatted it - It only registers 7.4GB. I checked BIOS - says 7.4GB. What is going on!
I also tried 2k on the HDD for experimental purposes, and It registers that 7.4gb plus the missing 12.6GB
What Gives
HELPTO ANSWER, SEE "Maxtor HDD not fully used"

mpr,
The 7.4 is likely a BIOS issue.
To recap what has been discussed at least 4000 time:
First the HD must be jumpered and cabled right.
The BIOS must correctly detect it. Or be told what it is.
It must be partitioned correctly.
It must be formatted.
Only then will any version of winders do anything intereesting.

You rock my friend.. the logical drive is registered now, but ofcourse another problem comes up. So to recap the first partition (1.09) and the second is at 2.9 .. Great.. problem is if i want to download an application like realplayer.. it will need the C drive.. and 100 megs left .. it is useless. Now what third party utility as you mentioned (freeware or legal fully featured trial version (hopefully under 100 megs lol) (also to add one that wont destroy the drive in the process and ofcourse keep all data on c drive) would unite both the c:\ and d:\ partitions into one without me having to reload windows Millenium edition.. Which i have already misplaced.
Ok now that was long winded lol Ok mechanic.. could you suggest something ? and again thank you

Hi mike,
For this to work you'll need another HD in the same box temporarily.
Get this file:
http://Golden-Triangle.com/PQDI.ZIP
Unzip it and copy all 8 files to a blank, formatted floppy.
Boot on a boot floppy, remove it and put in the PQDI floppy and:
mouse
[enter]
pqdi
[enter]Now create an image of the 1G parttion and save it on the OTHER HD.
Now choose to restore the image to the 4G drive BUT RESIZE the partition before restoring. It will warn you that the remaining 3G is not unallocated.
When done, you'll have the whole 4G and the identical contents of what was the 1G.
HTH

Well the only other hard drive i have is using linux and that is a b**** of a program to remove and ofcourse i cannot reload windows millenium edition .. So .. what to do from there.. I was looking at the fdisk commands.. Now if i delete the d:\ logical dos drive.. Will that not remove the partition and take it back into one full drive ?

I think Partition Magic will do it.
I haven't used it for years.
