Hi everyone - I am looking to upgrade my RAM, but I've heard that I should get RAM that is compatible with my Gateway. How can I make sure I purchase the correct type? Also, once I do this, does anyone have any tips/pointers for doing the actual installation? Thanks so much.

Crucial (dot com, I believe) has a RAM configurator, enter your pc's model number etc. and it tells you the type of RAM (and maximum amount the mobo can contain) you need.
That said, I contacted Mushkin.com via email and told them the model number etc. of my Compaq and they sent me their recommendations within 24 hours. I purchased Mushkin RAM (512MB pc133 SDRAM) and removed my old stick of Hyundai (OEM) RAM and put the two 256MB sticks in the slot that was vacated by my old RAM and the middle slot (mine will hold up to three 256MB sticks). I couldn't be happier with my Mushkin RAM.
When you install the RAM (be sure the pc is off and unplugged) grab bare metal just inside the case to discharge static electricity and push hard enough that the clips go into place by themselves. If you have to put the clips in place with your fingers, you didn't push quite hard enough. Either lay the case down or hold against the outside as you push the sticks into place; also don't touch the chips themselves (black rectangles that line both sides of the RAM), they are very sensitive to static and can be ruined easily.
