Subject: Win ME p.c. will not download AOL/MOS: Win MECPU/Ram: Celeron 384 MBModel/Manufacturer: H/P Pavillion |
Comment: In an effort to improve the performance of this p.c. (H/P Pav, WinME, 384mb ram) I deleted unused stuff, defragged it an reloaded and updated the operating system and programs. Now after many tries I can not get the AOl/Mcafee AV to download. I reset the security levels to default, cleared cookies, temp files, history. This computer was operating with AOL/Mcafee AV before I fooled with it. It runs a lot faster now, but it's naked. Is there a conflict somewhere? Could it be a winME update that I did not have before? Help! Thanks, from a newbie. 1. H/P Pavillion, Intel Celeron, Win ME, 384 mb. Ram, CDRW 2. Gateway AMD, win XP Home, 1 gb. ram, DVD+-RW

Reply: (edit)Log on to AOL, then chat "live" with one of their tech support people...they'll coach you right thru the fix

Reply: (edit)BTW, you'll probably find that the AOL/McAfee Security is what's been slowing your system down. You'd be better off with a *real* anti-v program

Reply: (edit)Ed, thanks for your response. I commonly delete cookies. As a matter of fact I was instructed to delete them during AOL's failed attempt to make this work. 1. H/P Pavillion, Intel Celeron, Win ME, 384 mb. Ram, CDRW 2. Gateway AMD, win XP Home, 1 gb. ram, DVD+-RW

Reply: (edit)Jam, AOl techs tried and failed. What do you mean by a "*real* anti-v program" Suggestions? I'm a rookie to AV. Do you think the AOL/Mcafee AV is sub par? 1. H/P Pavillion, Intel Celeron, Win ME, 384 mb. Ram, CDRW 2. Gateway AMD, win XP Home, 1 gb. ram, DVD+-RW

Reply: (edit)I too have had trouble with AOL McAfee anti- virus download. About a month ago I was getting some sort of error message related to Action-X controls or some such. Got online with AOL techies who walked me through several possible fixes. While I was busy with the latest attempted fix, they signed off after being online for 30 minutes. More recently I have been trying through the AOL Anti Virus Center where I still get the message "Congratulations! you qualify to download McAfee ViruScan", but when I try download I get a message which says "We're sorry, an error has occurred, pleast try again later" I had the free McAfee ViruScan before I had to uninstall because of a minor crash, but am about to give up getting it back. I will have to go to another anti-virus program if I can't solve the McAfee download. Jack
