In safe mode under device mangager the cd drives show up. But not in my computer
When booting normally the device manager shows code 10. Tried updating drivers no help.
Any suggestions?

In Safe Mode, that would be normal. Windows does not load its virtual mode drivers in Safe Mode so there is no access to CD-Rom drives and they will not show up in My Computer.
In normal mode a code 10 means either:
The device is not present, not working properly OR does not have device drivers installed.
But Windows ME has its own generic device drivers for CD-Rom drives, so that can not be the problem.
So either the IDE adapter is disabled, the cables are not plugged correctly, the Drive Master/Slave jumper(s) are not set correctly, or the drive(s) are now bad. (very common as they often fail from overheating after about a year of use).
Boot into Safe Mode, then go to Device Manager and open the CDROM entry. Select and "Remove" any/all CD-Rom entries. When done reboot the system and see what Windows finds. Check in Device manager. If there is still an error, it would be a hardware problem, not a Windows ME problem.

Sorry should have gave more info. Nornal boot the hard disk controller shows code 10
There are NO cd rom devices in device manager when normal boot. The floppy controller is also code 10. I had thought those would be generic windows drivers not specific to the computer??
any more thoughts??
Thanks
