My Dell 4100 came with WinMe pre-installed, 900Mhz CPU, 128 MB RAM. It is hooked up to an office peer-to-peer network of machines with Win 95 to Win 2K Pro and everything in between. We all access the Internet via network cards and a DSL router - for this reason, we each have static IP addresses.

While my WinMe Dell can *access* resources on the network, navigaring to shared folders, opening, copying, moving etc. files is painfully slower than on older machines running Win98. What gives? Is it something to do with what network protocols are installed (or not), and what is bound to what?

Many thanks for your help.

Man, I had the same problem on a machine I installed ME on. At first, I was able to copy files to and from it with another PC on my LAN. Something changed sometime down the line. I could copy from this PC to other PCs on my LAN but it took like 10 minutes to copy a 1 MByte file from any machine to this one although, unlike you, I could still navigate OK. I tried everything; physically replacing the NIC with other models, drivers, locking Ethernet link rates, different LAN, reloading ME on top of itself, setting MTU, etc., having the file transfers go to another drive on this PC, you name it. The problem would not go away. I finally installed ME onto another harddrive in this PC as a test and it fixed the problem, so I imported its registry into the original ME and the problem still occurred. I finally gave up and saved all data from that hard drive and reformat the drive and install ME again. So far, so good. No one seems to know anything about this problem accept you and me. You talk about a real winner of problems.

Hey, I had the same problem in a peer to peer
net with a W98 (not SE) machine.
static IP Adresses, TCP/IP the only protocol.
I installed NETBUI as second and the problem
was gone...
but no way with TCP/IP as the only protocol.
