About 90% of general protection faulsts are caused by conflicting versions of DLL's. Years ago Microsoft decided to encourage software developers to store all their programs' DLLs in the \Windows\system subfolder. Unfortunately, this has led to a number of problems which buggers up a system. DLLs often change over time as features are added or changed. Install programs are suppose to check DLL version numbers and install their version on the system. But of course, a sloppy programmed application won't do this. Some install untilities install a programs DLLs in the programs home folder. This often means you end up with two or more copies of the same file scattered around the system. If one program uses a DLL with the same name as another programs DLL, one file usually gets overwritten. It is also very difficult to know which DLLs correspond to which programs. If it doesn't come with an uninstall utility it is tossed into the system subfolder and usually in there for good. The best solution is to start from scratch, wipe you hard drive clean and reinstall WindowsME. This removes any DLL conflict which may have accumulated and ensures WinMe starts on an even keel. If you feel that you can't do this try http://support.microsoft.com You may find a reference to you problem there.
