A friend with Windows Me, self extracting exe files.... first was changed ty msn to .exe[1] after downloading from msn community. DLs of EXE files would not function properly to open them after that. She attempted to Change it back omitting the [1] extra extention msn is notorious for in our community. We always just renamed the fle before saving upon DL....
Now... The only program or file that is working on her computer is MSN Messenger. Everyone of them say they need to be associated with or what program to use to open this. Her Norton won't even open ... which she runs faithfully and keeps updated. She is comp savvy.... any ideas? Need a quick fix... Thanks... Can cherokeecandy@thegrid.net p/s yes I am having to help her tomorrow via the telephone from Texas to California.

I had a VERY similar problem. It turned out to be a virus. I have Norton installed but it did not report a virus. As a last resort I updated dat's with live update and whamo! a virus was found. It was the sysrnj worm. It changes file associations and over-writes EXE's! So, if you have anti-virus software, update the dat's. If not, you need to install an anti-virus package. If it turns out to be the sysrnj worm whatever you do, DO NOT ERASE OR DELETE THE SYSRNJ.exe FILE! There is a fix for this worm but you must still have the sysrnj.exe file to administer the fix. I made the mistake of letting norton delete this file and I was left formatting my Hard Drive!

Hope this helps,
Tek

tekjunky you are so correct... it was that virus...... I decided it had to be a virus and upon searching day and night I found a virus that messes with the file extentions ... coolsite, verona ... aliases of verona I believe..... but Norton did not detect it on her machine. She called a teckie who had her do something and reboot..... walla gone.... nuttin..... lol we got it back on via telephone by setting the registry date back...... with that she got online and did an online scan..... walla sysrnj.exe virus file was there and the infected file was a temporary internet file named
c:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\VHZDM31E\ab3[1].js
The name of the virus is actually found as
JS.Exception.Exploit
Norton is knocked out completely. Will not work. I don't know if she dumped that file or not. I have not heard from her lately and will call her again and see if she still has a comp lol. Thanks.... and glad you understood my English. lol CherokeeCandy
