My system sometimes shuts down by it self, the screen goes black and it restarts, what's up with that!! It's a pain in the ass...

Howdy, Did this start happening with just Windows Me? Most of the time when you computer restarts itself you are dealing with a hardware problem, not software. A bad power supply is known to cause this problem. If you can give more details it would help.
Laters,

Howdy, Well if its running stable I would just continue to use it. It could be a Win Me problem but not one I have heard off. If it continues re-post with as many details you can give since this helps us, help you.
See Ya,

The same exact thing has happened to me. I had to uninstall ME because of it. :( I am really bummed. Someone help! It is some type of ME / ware conflict. I am running an HP 733mhz on a home network with a firewall. Not sure if that has any thing to do with it, but it may help someone better understand my problem. Any help, please send my way! Desperate.
Thanks,
FFPS

Hi FFPS
you said:
"I am running an HP 733mhz on a home network with a firewall."
That could be a problem, a few personal firewalls that worked well in win98 appear to have problems in Winme.
ISP firewalls however haven't caused any problems with Winme (as far as I know)
Here is a list of the ones I have tried:
Black ice (version 2.1.22 u)It doesn't filter properly.
Nortons personal firewall (will not install if Winme is already setup)
eSafe - so so, it does work but has an annoying habit of jumping back to its default config.
ZoneAlarm - works okay.
AdSubtract- not really a firewall but used a fair bit, works okay.
** At Guard ** - This one causes major problems with Winme, if you upgrade to Winme with this program already installed (on w95/98) the install fails, sometimes halts and does other other odd things. The main problem is with a file called ndis.vxd which Winme has a fit over.
If you install At Guard onto Winme the install goes well but when it comes time to start your machine again, the problems pop up. (and yes its the same file causing the problem)
You can narrow it down (without going in safe mode) by starting your machine again (keep pressing the F8 key or ctrl key -depends on your system -) and do a step by step confirmation before loading into Winme.
It's a hasle, but play around with the yes/no configurations until you find which file is causing the problem. Naturally you can also check the ini files and do a search for the word fail to see what was loaded and what was not.
A few other things to watch out for:
Win95/98 tweak programs, & Win boost.
Hope the above helps, good luck.
Peyote.

I have the same exact problem - screen either freezes or goes black and computer restarts itself. It only happens when I am on the internet, especially when I am downloading big files. Also during games, but only when i'm playing multiplayer on the internet. I have cable internet through a LAN card and network, with an external broadband sharing/firewall thingamajig. Would this suggest it is my network card? A few times out of the million a blue screen pops up with "An exception OD has occured at 0028:..... in VxD --- blah, blah" (the dashes are an actual part of the message). After trying to narrow it down to one VxD using msconfig, I think it is ndis.vxd, which, I think, is in charge of communicating network and internet stuff. Because I only get this screen one in a hundred times, though, this might be a seperate, irrelevant problem, but I somehow don't think so.

I had exactly the same problem with "Nortons Internet Secutity 2000"Every time i tried to connect to the internet it would crash and restart. But as soon as i uninstalled the programe i connected up with no problems.I feel you will have to wait until the inevitable patches are realeased.

I found the problem on my computer. I don't know why I didn't check before. My graphics card, my sound card, my network card, and my firewire card were all on the same IRQ. That'll do it. So I found the option in the BIOS "Plug & Play OS" and set it to "yes" and all of my IRQ's spread out.

I disabled my com ports to free up a couple of IRQs as well (you could disable usb hubs or audio dos emulation or anything else you're not using too)... in some BIOSs you can assign certain PCI slots to certain IRQs. If resources is YOUR problem, fooling around with this stuff will solve it.

My son's PC kept doing this. It would just shut down and reboot for no reason mostly while online.
The problem was right in front of everyone's face! We felt pretty dumb when we finally figured it out.
First: How is your PC connected? What I mean is, does it have a dedicated, seperate outlet and this is not connected to any other part of the house? We have a seperate line for our PC stuff, it is on a line to the box by its self.
At My son's house, his PC is connected to a seperate outlet, BUT it runs on the same circuit as part of the kitchen. SO...every time the refridgerator compressor kicked on..guess what? You guessed it! The PC rebooted.
A low power surge will do this.
It is on a seperate line now and is fine.
This is just another idea to check before nuking your PC or going nuts trying to figure out whats wrong.
Hope this helps someone.
