My Pentium w/MMX, 200mhz, machine has 2 hard drives.
HD#1 C: 15GB drive w/WINME
HD#2 hdb: 4GB drive w/LINUX
with LILO to select the OS.

I reformated HD#2 and made the whole drive a D: DOS partition. It all worked fine until I rebooted. I used to get a
LILO:
prompt where I could type dos or linux to get the OS I wanted. Now I get
LI
and that's it. The computer hangs. When I boot from floppy I can see the C: and D: fine.

3 questions:
1. How do I view/copy/backup the MBR?
2. Will fdisk /mbr overright the MBR with some default?
3. Will this blow away all my data?

if you're wanting to do away with lilo and boot to c: with just win-me and data on d: that accessable from win-me.
boot with a win-me startup disk and at a:
type sys c:
press enter
it will respond system transferred
take out the floppy, reboot ,and it should go straight into windows-me.

try that before the fdisk /mbr and see if it takes care of it, I know that is the solution for dual booting xp and win-me when you want to be rid of xp boot menu, sys c: that is.

Insert Windows boot disk, at A:> prompt type fdisk /mbr (don't forget the space) You will not lose data, just LI. After reboot Windows will start normally. I think that you can also use this if you mbr is infected with a virus.

hello
f disk will kill all data on the partion its used on.if your useing partion magic it might not.well its not saposed too. if you want to lose every thing than repartion with f disk.if you do as www sagests it most likely to work.once into windows you should d/l a partion manager.if your still going to deul boot system comander ,partion magic, nortions boot commander,or other boot command programs will manage your deul booting..
have a nice day

itmdtr is right, fdisk /mbr will not mess up your data, it will restore your master boot record but it doesn't bother the rest of the drive. It can also be used to get rid of boot sector viruses.

Why will "sys c:" work?

I see that "a:> sys c:" will copy system files (command.com, io.sys, msdos.sys, drvspace.bin) from the WinME boot disk to c:. But what happens to the MBR?

How can I view the contents of the MBR record?

Looks like your problem is the dual boot mbr that linux runs. When you removed it, there was nothing for it to look for on the D: drive to run the boot selection.

Here is extensive info on fdisk including a way to view the contents on this website.
