I had installed a new HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart scanner a few days ago and now on every Windows startup there is a folder that loads onto my desktop. The folder is open when it loads and inside is:
(1)Diagnostic Assistant
(2)Digital Imaging
(3)HP Software update
(4)Hpcoretech
(5)Temp

I don't use these programs for scanning. Everything I need is in another folder in my programs menu.

I had my Norton's Antivirus scan everything in this folder and it didn't find anything wrong but it did show that there are 3548 files in there. I don't know if they all load on startup, but I hope not.

I went into MSCONFIG and unchecked all of the hp items and it still loads up. I also looked in my start menu and checked under my startup items and there is nothing there. I have my computer set to show all hidden files and extentions also, if that even helps?.

I have done some searching in this forum and on google but couldn't find any answers to this problem.

I don't know where else to look or what to do to keep this from loading at startup. Can someone help me? Please? Thanks!

do not remove the software, any desktop item can easily be deleted with right click-delete.
it has no affect on the program.

I have taught myself most of what learned about computers on my own, so if I question anything that someone tells me to do, it's because I don't understand that part yet. So sorry for asking this:

I looked at the properties of the items inside this folder and they say the location is in C:\Programs\****. It doesn't show that they are shortcuts on my desktop like the other folders that I have on my desktop say.

Also here is the biggest problem. The main folder that opens up on startup, that one that has all these HP programs inside, is not in an icon form. How do you close a folder that is opened. When I right click on the header it only gives me the option to close/resize and move and inside the folder it says arrange icons, refresh, customize, new and properties , but no "delete" option.

So what can I do about all of this?

What happens to the folder when you 'close' it (you said that was one of the options available)? Does it stay on your desktop? If so, is the folder itself a shortcut (i.e. what are it's properties)? If it is, and the files inside the folder are all located in C:/Program files, then the folder is most likely a shortcut that can be safely deleted. Another indication that it's a shortcut would be if you open Windows Explorer and see if the same folder and contents are located in C:/Program files. If something goes wrong, you can always restore the folder from your Recycle bin and that should set things back the way they were.

Tammy1949,

Go Start..Run..Type;

win.ini

Press Enter

That should open it {win.ini}in notepad. Look under [windows], at these two entries; load= and run= Is there any thing after the = sign, for either? When done looking, just close it, ok.

There are two 'startup' folders {default}, not just one. There are alot of places, to make what you talk about happen. Go to http://www.sysinternals.com, and get the "autoruns", and use it. it doesn't install files. It just runs itself, and adds 'one' registry entry. Just double-click it, the "autoruns.exe", not the "autorunsc.exe". That is the command line version.... They should/will have directions/instructions at the site. Might just be surprised, as to what's starting. If you want to see all....nevermind. Just another little helpful gadget ;-)

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

Hi Gil Theissen and CrazyOne.

CrazyOne,
There is nothing listed after the (load) command but here is what is listed in the (run) command....run=hpfsched.

Is this my problem? What do I need to do now?

Gil Theissen this is for you.
I had said in my first post, (Also here is the biggest problem. The main folder that opens up on startup, that one that has all these HP programs inside, is not in an icon form)

It looks like a folder would after you had opened it. It has the normal File/Edit/View/Favorites/Tools/Help. On the second toolbar line it has Search/Folders.

I can close the folder just fine, but I can't make it stop loading on windows startup and I can't delete it with it already opened when it loads. Just a little added information, this opened folder is called just (HP). All of these folders are eactly the same as the ones in my explorer.

HPFSCHED.EXE is apparently a background task which is installed by the drivers of some HP printers to remind you from time to time to clean the cartridges so as to keep the print quality high. I have it in my computer so I doubt that's the problem with yours.

I take it that when you close the folder it disappears entirely so you can't examine it's properties. If that's the case then something is telling it to load on startup. You say there's nothing in your startup folder and you shut down all the hp files in msconfig, but what about the rest of the files in msconfig? Do you recognize all of them and know what they do? If not, you can try shutting them down one by one to see what happens (don't shut down scanreg) or go here: http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html to see if it's listed and what it does.

If that doesn't help run regedit and look under the registry keys HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Run and RunOnce keys to see if there's anything there connected to this HP folder.

If that doesn't help, rename the folder (remember what you rename it to so you can find it again) reboot and see if it still appears and/or you can still use your scanjet. Renaming it might fool whatever program is telling it to load, but it also might make your scanjet nonusable, so if that doesn't work or help then give it back it's old name.

I feel pretty stupid right now. I rechecked the msconfig and found that I still had one hp item checked, so I unchecked this and the folder didn't come back when I restarted the computer. I didn't think that this had anything to do with the scanner that I installed??

What is really strange is that this folder on my desktop was for my scanner, not for the hp CD Writer. I installed the CD Writer around 2 years ago. Anyway, msconfig lists it as "Hp CD Writer -- C:\Program Files\HP CD Writer\Mmue\hpcdtray.exe"

I haven't used the cd writer since I installed the scanner. But the CD writer has been giving me problems lately with formating the disks so I can use the disk for data on my computer. Usually freezing or seamingly froze cause of the time it was taking and wouldn't cancel when I told it to. But it just might be me not doing something right. I will have to see if my cd writer still works now. lol. Well enough of that.

I don't understand how this startup command is even related to the scanner. Do you have any idea what the cd tray is for and why it affects my scanner folder?

I did download the autoruns. I want to thank you very much for your time
