Before the computer problems we encountered earlier in the week we were running the free downloaded version of ZoneAlarm. Our ISP insists that was what caused all of our problems and advised getting a hardware firewall. We are thinking about purchasing ZoneAlarmPro, but have heard that Norton's firewall is good. Which is the best software firewall to use? Or is it advisable to get a hardware firewall? We are running Windows ME and Norton2002 antivirus.

Go to the PC Flank website for firewall reviews. The best security defense is a combination of hardware and free software firewall of your choice to give you a layered defense. The software program will notify you about any outgoing connection request should you get a trojan. A hardware firewall will not do this function. My ISP has had problems with Norton firewalls too. Take care!

Your ISP is talking a load of rubbish. Undoubtedly the best firewall is Zonealarm - I can't imagine how this would cause any problems. It gets consistently good reviews in all the mags and does the job. I use the free version which is perfectly good, but you may wish to splash out on the Pro version for more features. For firewall comparisons check out grc.com, excellent site. Also use their Shields Up facility to test your ports.

That is so true.

Zone Alarm is one of the best things a user should have on his/her computer nowadays.

It used to be downloaded for free..but I see that recently they are finally commercializing it completely.

Another tip: Good to have with the firewall of your chioce an antivirus of your choice, enabled with real time scanning while you're downloading emails or any other type of files.

And last but nevertheless important, one good security approach should also be , to enjoy your browsings behind a proxy service.

The things that a firewall may miss when blocking incoming data, can be filtered and watched behind a proxy.

Combined with a firewall uuu la la!!!
