Comment: which is the better firewall of the two, zonealarm or tiny personal firewall? I was using zonealarm before a whole bunch of errors with the vsdata file started occuring. Is tiny personal firewall any good? Are there any other good firewalls out there? ~gracias~

If you understand what is ports, what is outgoing and inbound connection, what is TCP, what is UDP, what is ICMP, than you can run Tiny FW without problem. Tiny is as powereful as ZA but it is more difficult to configure.

3 favourites to evaluate.
Z/A, Tiny, Sygate 4.2 all get mentioned on here because they are free and are effective.

Reply: (edit)Try using e-safe (www.esafe.com). It combines a firewall with a virus-scanner, is easy to use and is free if you use it as a home user. You'll receive a mail whenever an update is available. I have been using it for some time now and so far it stopped several virusses trying to corrupt my system. So far it works very well for me. If you decide to download, choose the desktop version.

Reply: (edit)I had been using ZoneAlarm for a while and thought it was great ... especially the user interface. Just as an experiment, and because i needed to plug the Internet Explorer leaks ... i tried Sygate .... to my surprise in the end i felt Sygate was much more thorough and kept me better informed about what was going on ... so now i just use that.... cheers Steve

Zonealarm and Tiny are both free and better.
Panda software is the best paid antivirus product.
AVG is the best free antivirus product.

Reply: (edit)I would have to agree with Sanj. For the average joe(which includes me)ZA is the easiest to use and configure. The others may work well but unless you have a very thourough understanding of all the ins and outs you may have some serious leaks.

Reply: (edit)by far BITDEFENDER is the top firewall and antivirus money can buy. I have Bitdefender for more than 1 year and it works perfect even on Windows XP.
My best 45$ invested :)
