Hi all.

I was just wondering why so many people say Windows ME is such a bad OS? I've heard many people say this and never actually heard why.Can anyone answer this? Thanks so much.

Well, from what I've heard, a lot of people say it's really unstable and crashes a lot more than say, Windows 98SE, among other complaints. However, I've also heard others who say Windows ME, properly tweaked, can run just as well as 98SE. I've been trying it out for myself recently, and after having used this guide, it runs at least as well as Win98SE did on this system. (still not as well as 2000/XP though) Still, many others say it's really bad, but I've heard plenty who would say the same thing about 98 and/or 95 as well.

For some of us that have reasons
not to use 2000 or XP
it's the best.
(I like it more than 98SE)

The reason Windows NT/2000/XP is more stable and reliable than Windows 95/98/ME is because it is a real operating system, not just a GUI sitting on top of DOS.

If, like me, you've tweaked XP you can actually get a usable OS out of it. Disable most of the services, remove the rubbish, use Windows Update, install latest hardware drivers and defrag your hard disk with Diskeeper.

Then, of course, you install all of your favourite applications or games and defrag once more.

Once you've done all of that, you have a pretty stable and "easy-to-use" OS.

Not sure why people think this , I have been running it for years now and I never have a problem with it , and the restore function comes in handy when you do screw something up . It has been very stable for me . I wouldn't run it with less than 128 meg of ram though .

Excellent OS, you must control startup programs (just as with any 9x OS) and a few tweaks improve performance tremendously.

Very stable and easy to use OS, imo; at least it is for me.

I will move to Linux when I can for internet and keep ME for gaming and other "Windows only" apps.

I went straight from Windows 98SE to XP Pro, so I can't say I've had much experience with Windows ME. However, I do know plenty of people who use it and are quite happy (then again, I know a few unhappy people too). I've played around a bit on other PCs running ME and all I can say is that it seems to be just another followup from the 95/98/98SE clan. The only difference is that there's more bloat and Microsoft have tried to hide DOS from the user.

richard: Thanks, I've been tweaking XP basically since it first came out. After finding out the "tricks of the trade" it's pretty simple to kick it into shape... but it requires a lot of time and a lot of patience! lol

drsletmedown: I'll be happy to help you out. I'll e-mail you with some general tips. If you need any specific help, don't hesitate to e-mail me back...

"First of all the system is unstable no matter what cpu you put it on. Second The upgrade from a earlier OS is not clean. You will have many errors because of this."

I have yet to see this for myself... I upgraded from Windows 98SE to ME on this system, and so far ME has been running at least as well as 98SE did. I don't know if I've used it enough yet to be totally sure, but I would almost go so far as to say that I've had less problems with it than I did with 98SE. (if so, only by a little, though) It obviously doesn't compared to 2000/XP (which I also have on this system) in terms of speed and stability, but for a 9x based system, properly tweaked, it's been pretty decent for me so far, and perfect for what I need it for. Since the whole 9x line suffers from resource issues, I find things run smoothest if I reboot every few days, but it's nothing more than I had to do with Windows 98SE. And as a plus, I also get a few of the Windows 2000 features I like in ME that weren't in 98.

"it's... stable, can run most if not all programs and games perfectly. It hardly has blue screens, you get the point."

So far, you've just described my experiences with Windows ME. ;)

I have heard from others who have had tons of problems with ME, but I've heard just as many of the same complaints from 95/98/98SE users as well. It probably mostly comes down to preference and tweaking. From experience, I'd highly recommend (and do so whenever possible) Trev's guide to anyone using ME. I noticed significant improvement right away after using it on my system.

I've been using Me since it was released and find it very stable and user friendly.
I have a suspicion that people who deride it
would propably screw up any system, through their ignorance, and/or poor user practices.
