What is up with my floppy drive?

My Windows ME floppy disk drive used to read 1.38 MB floppys but, somehow, it only reads the capacities of 1.44 MB and 720 kB now. It says that the 1.38 MB disks cannot be accessed by the drive and, therefore, cannot be formatted. Our Windows ME was not factory installed and it was working within the first few months before we got internet connection. I have scanned this drive with Norton Anti-Virus and it states that everything is a-okay. I checked the control panel, but I haven't really gone thru any DOS files and whatnot. This is about all the technical info that I can give to you right now because I'm still learning. Please give me suggestions on what to try or let me know if I have to check the "motherboard." Mahalo for your time and take care.

If you have 1.38mb floppies then you surely have a problem because there isn't such. So please come back when you have a serious problem!

Coty,
I guess I'm a little confused on the problem. Are these disks you have put some thing on that you no longer can see what is on them or are you trying to format a floppy disk and it wont let you. If the second check to see if your disks are write protected. If the first and it's disks you have gotten from someone or a place are they written for a Windows PC or Mac PC

Migod Star what the h*** are you talking about?

Eric... have a look at the disk size for your A:\ drive when next you open Explorer and you will see that it is 1.38mb. When you buy a box of diskettes they are labelled as 1.44 but when you format them the size reduces to 1.38. And by the way the term floppy refers to the original 5 1/4 disk which was in a soft plastic sleeve and was in fact "floppy". Todays hard case disks are diskettes.

So many non-experts...... I came here with a question myself...a 1.38 meg floppy is formatted to be a 1.38, most can be formatted to be 1.44 space overall depending on the FAT type (FAT=file allocation table) I simply came here to figure out how to alter my fat so i can fit this 1.40 meg boot image onto my floppy......and i know it SHOULD so 1.38 is b.s.
