The '~' or tilde file appears either on your desktop or in the root directory etc. depending on where outlook express opens from (don't know why the difference). It appears after a change has been made to the contacts list. It is a known glitch but I personally think it is a handy one. It lets you know when changes are made and is handy if it appears when you haven't made any changes yourself, it means someone else has been there and changed something. It is safe to delete as it is only a back-up of your contact list before the change was made.

Thanks Dog. I didn't want to try to open it without doing some checking.
As for Dave's reply. I've done the spy bot s & d, and the ad-aware, done the nortong scan, and am doing the panda scan right now. The Panda program seems to be taking a very long time to run. So far no virus has turned up.
I was making a new boot disk today, and Norton popped up with a warning detecting 'virus like' activity trying to write to the A:\disk, specifically the Rundll32.exe was trying to write to it. So I'm still not convinced there is no virus. Will run through the other suggestions you made. Thanks

hello
i figured it was the outlook file like dog pointed out but you made it sound like it was in anther place than it useally is. thats why the spyware virus alert flags went up. after the scan is done and your clean just delete it and know for sure your now safe.
have a nice day.
