What is the best way to destroy CDR

Since these discs are so cheap now I regularly make backups of my work, this leaves me with the problem of how to dispose of the discs safely.

I have financial and personal data on the discs as well as work records.

At the moment I just rub them with sand paper and cut them in to 4 pieces.

I am sure this is more than adequate but I have seen on the net, sites saying that it is possible to piece together the disc and recover data.

Should I cook them or what? Any suggestions.

th only way to make sure your disks are thouroly destroyed is to throw them in a wood chipper, melt them, burn them, or soak in a sulpheric/hydrocloric/hydrofloric acid

Thanks everyone.

I had thought about the microwave but was worried it might start sparking or even blow up.

I will try the carb spray, a colleague just told me to use my girlfriends nail polish remover, do you think this will work?

Such a fun topic!

Sanding and breaking them to pieces should be ample unless it's the FBI that you are afraid of.

Also would be a good idea to overwrite the data. If it's a CD-RW you can wipe it with a file wiping utility. You can't click the disc in my computer and tell it to wipe, but if you have a wiping utility with a right click shell extension (PGP, Eraser) you can open the disc and select all the files, right click and tell it to wipe them (I've done his with Eraser but not PGP, but both should work). This will screw up the formatting of the disc but since it's being destroyed anyway...

After sanded but before you break it, cut out the center of the disc. A CD is divided into 330,000 sectors and sector 16 is the most important. Sector 16 is located about... well roughly 16/330,000ths from the center of the disc! Cut out the center and do something evil to it.

Then microwave. Put it in a ziploc bag first if you like your pizza sans poison. Some people say it can screw up your microwave though!

wanna make sure no one ever looks at that disk again? Paint AOL 1000 free hours on it. That will send them running :)

This would have to be the best post ever! I would not have believed that someone could be so paranoid about data. I would have thought that after a dose of sandpaper any self respecting laser would give up the ghost.
