i just bought a comp with windows me on it.....it has a program called star office 5.2 but where is my word or excel programs??..is star office the same?

Star Office is a rival program to Microsoft Office that is put out by Sun Microsystems.
It was most likely included on your computer because it is completely free... as opposed to Microsoft Office which costs hundreds of dollars.
If you want to learn how to use it... and how to import things into MS office at work that you have created in Star Office see:
There is even an animated flash demo to help you figure out all the features.
If you want Microsoft Office instead you will have to buy it from someplace like amazon.com . Where it costs $429.99 for the standard edition.
Give StarOffice a shot. You might like it.

Star Office is free because that is what it is worth. If the vendor told you that your system had office on it and gave you that, you were ripped off. I would go back and if they don't give you a current version of Office (XP), demand your money back.

star office on a windows box... now ive heard it all. you should have atleast gotten MS works which is the home/cheap office suite almost every computer out there comes with unless you specify office which in turn drives the cost of the pc up. star office comes with most linux distro's. every experience ive had with it is buggy, buggy, buggy. slow loading constant errors. then again maybe if i knew a little more about it i could solve some problems.

As stated above, Star Office is an economy office suite similiar to Corel Wordperfect suite or MS Office suite(I'm not sure, but I think the Star windows version is not free, but sells for about $50.00). IF you can't afford the full version of MS office suite and this is the program you like to use, check out some of the vendors that sell unopened earlier versions of the program. You can usually pick them up for a small percentage of the latest available versions.

The deluxe version does cost about $40.00 I had seen it in a catalog for about $50.00 several months ago.

But you are right, you can get it free. (I guess the $40.00 version comes with a disk and maybe a book.)
