Hi! Everyone!
ON my CompuServe ISP,it says as I am logging on: Connected at 52,600bps.I was told that this is the speed of my CPU to my Modem.Give me an example of what line speed is measured in(how it is written), thank you.--Donald
P.S.:it is 6PM here in Texas(central),and as a old guy,it is time for my nap. That way I can be back at the computer at say, starting at about 11:30PM till 3:30 AM! (this Sun. night).I'll check back then.

BPS is the baud rate. This is the rate at which you are connected to your isp. It means bits per second. 52,600 is a pretty darn good conection for a 56k modem.

This is a quite a involved question. It(speed)is many things ie upload speed, download speed, packet size, packet loss, latency etc etc.The best answer i can give you is some links to sites that can explain it better than I.Copy and paste these links to your browser window.First some common terms>>>

Next,some factors effecting speed>>>>>

Another good page on modems in general is here>>

And finally to really test your speed try

or

hope this helped

HI! Scott!, jimi_1! and mewgrl!

Thanks a heap (texas talk)for all your replys.I am going over all of them.-newgrl,I went to that web page and tested my connection speed like you said. Results said 5780 cps in which it said equaled to 46,000bps.I just did one test. But get this, there was one thing I didn't tell you. Here it is: Today, and at other different times,I started the computer and logged on to CompuServe. This time it said "connected at 57,600bps"!!.Man, that's something for a 56 Modem!-------------Donald
P.S.: jimi_1,I will go and check out your sites.I'm late getting back to ya'lls replys. It is now 1:40 AM Texas Time (cent.)

You didn't log in at 57,600. That is what you have set the serial bus speed at and that is what is being reported.

The FTC has set limits on the phone lines of 53k. That is that fastest you can ever hope to achive.
