Hi everyone. I'm having some problems booting my pc and I used a ME bootdisk that I downloaded from bootdisk.com. I am running scandisk on my pc right now. If it does not find anything wrong, what else if anything can I try?

Try restoring the registry to a date before the problem occured.
scanreg /restore (press enter)
Choose a date from the list,restore and reboot.You may try more than once with alternate dates.Good luck.

Wow. Startup disks are more powerful than I thought. I'll be sure to try that after scandisk is finished. Thank you.

scanreg /restore is run from the C:\ prompt.
Not the A:\ prompt.
And I'm not even sure that would be a valid command for ME. I'll look into it.
I know it don't wash with XP. Of course XP is a whole other animal.
Let me go google this topic. I'll be back with an answer.

Well. Looks like i was wrong.
Looks like ME didn't change a whole lot from 98SE. As far as saving your arse from the command line.
I recommend this thread from an earlier POST from this site on how to use System restore and scanreg/ restore from the command prompt.

How to save your arse from the command line.

Hi

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;221512

A good tip to change the number of registry copies Windows creates above the default of only five.

Start WIndows Explorer and then find and open a file in c:\windows called "scanreg .ini" Just find it and double left click on it to open it.

Make two minor changes to it. Increase the number of copies of the registry backup made automatically by Windows 98 FE & SE and WIN ME ]

I have copied the top section of my scanreg.ini file below which includes the two changes.

I have changed the maxbackup copies from the default of 5 to 15

I have set a path of c:\registry for the location of these files.

Both of these changes are clearly shown in the copy below.

; Scanreg.ini for making system backups.
;

;Registry backup is skipped altogether if this is set to 0
Backup=1

;Registry automatic optimization is skipped if this is set to 0
Optimize=1

ScanregVersion=0.0001
MaxBackupCopies=15

;Backup directory where the cabs are stored is
; \sysbckup by default. Value below overrides it.
; It must be a full path. ex. c:\tmp\backup
;
BackupDirectory=c:\registry

Having made the changes simply save the file

I have also created a sub folder in the c:\registry folder called old registry. As windows only looks for the last five copies of the registry even though you store 15 copies, I move the 10 oldest copies to this folder regularly.

The registry files only occupy just over 1mb. Having the extra copies can help you go back a little further to find a working registry if you get a similar problem in the future

Two simple changes that can be invaluable in a WIN 98 / ME environment
