weird volume control problems

The volume control keeps going down when i turn it up. It just creeps down until it is muted. I have tried a 3rd party mixer like QMixer but it didn't help. I also have the latest driver for my sound card. I have a Compaq Presario 8000 and an ESS Allegro sound card. Any help would be greatlly appreciated.

hello lots of dust on the card? try takeing the cover off and blowing the dust out of computer . allso with power unpluged try reseating the card. have a nice day

Make sure you ground yourself(touch the side of the case,metal),or wear an anti-static wristband before poking around in there.
