I recently had a horrible experience with my computer after downloading the newest version of Windows Media Player, and I'd like to warn anybody with Windows ME about this.
If you have a program (such as Norton Ghost) that can make a clone of your hard drive, do so before installing WMP9.
When I installed it, it damaged the MFC42.DLL file somehow, and a bunch of programs didn't work. I extracted the file from the install CABS, but it still didn't work. WMP9 doesn't come with an uninstaller, so you have to rely on System Restore (which never works when you need it to).
So, I reinstalled Windows and I tried installing an older version of WMP but neither worked. That just caused an error to appear whenever WMP was run. I also tried using scanreg to restore to an older registry, but that didn't help either. In the end, I had to copy my C: drive to another hard drive, format, reinstall, and copy the files back. Luckily, I was able to restore the registry and there wasn't too much that needed to be reinstalled.I share this story simply as a caution - before you consider upgrading to Windows Media Player 9, make sure you have a backup of all your important data (if not your entire hard drive). It can save you from a lot of trouble!

Thanks Burbble for sharing that information.
I'll steer clear of it, recently I tried downloading it but fortunately, was booted at 99%!
Incidentally, WMP7 has no Uninstall but managed to get rid of most of it (cannot delete WMP2 from it's folder).
System Restore will work when you want it to - if you download the patches.
Cheers.
Bill.

I did download that 290007 patch (or whatever number it is) for System Restore, but it always gives some kind of error message either when I open it, make a restore point, or restore back to an earlier point.
It seems like any little thing will make it stop functioning...
Perhaps it doesn't like me :)
