Hi,

I just purchased a computer, running with millennium. I have not had access to normal AOL (I use the "AOL Anywhere" thing to check my mail) in about 2 years, and wanted to install it so I could finally cancel my account. Well...during the start-up phase of AOL, I get a message that say my modem settings need to be set. Click OK to continue. I click OK and get: Waol has caused an error (sorry, can't recall the exact wording) in KERNEL32.dll and will shut down.

I've called AOL and was told this was a Microsoft problem. Microsoft says it's an AOL problem. All I want to do is get the stupid thing loaded so I can cancel my account! I don't care who's problem it is, just tell me how to fix it!

Please? Anyone? I'm so frustrated with the whole thing.

Which version of AOL are you trying to install? if you're trying to install anything before 5.0, it probably won't install.

check out these knowledge base articles from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/6/54.ASP

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q191/6/21.ASP

http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/Topics/Winme/aol/WinmeAOL.asp

out of curiosity... can't you just call them to cancel your account? weird...

I know now, (after persistantly bugging AOL) that Windows ME and AOL 5.0 are not compatible. They finally admitted this to me (I kept getting kernel32.dll errors also) and they said that AOL 6.0 was created to run with Windows ME. Any earlier version of AOL is NOT compatible with Windows ME. It's kinda funny, because I too wanted to cancel my AOL account because of all the problems and the representative at AOL said, "We'll give you 2 free months of service (their fix for everything...LOL...) and send you an AOL version 6.0 disk to install." Well, 1 1/2 months later, I'm still waiting for that disk. Good Luck!

I am having the same problem - only it's 6.0 that I keep getting the kernel32 error with, Rhonda....have you had any luck yet? This is so frustrating and I have no intention of sitting on the phone with AOL Tech Support for an hour for them to jerk me around....

I'm having the exact problem... I'm running WindowsME and the error happens when I try running AOL 6.0. I try opening AOL but I get an error message that says "There was a problem with the AOL file that contains your AOL Access Phone Number information. Your Access Phone Number information and modem settings will have to be selected again. Please click OK to start the setup process." But when I click OK, I get an error that says "Waol has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. Waol will now close." I tried calling AOL but they would only refer me to Microsoft.. but I don't want to have to call Microsoft...this is an AOL problem! Please email me if you have a solution to this.

Same experience - AOL6 to fails to start on Win ME with using MSI 6330 with 1Ghz AMD Tbird, 256MB. Thought that AOL6 CD might be bad so installed it from downloaded kit - same result.

Same combo runs OK on AMD K6-3 450 128MB laptop.

My Mother is having this same problem, with W98 (NOT SE) and AOL 6.0 upgrade. She had 5.0 first with the AIM that was with it. Since the upgrade, she still has the AIM version that was with AOL 5.0, but has installed the newest AIM version as a seperate download from the AOL site. The two AIM versions conflict with each other, she cannot seem to get rid of the frist one. Calls AOL constantly for help, gets told that the AIM version that is on the 6.0 disk IS the latest version. She continually gets the WAOL&Kernel 32.dll error messages, gets kicked off the IN,has lock ups, etc. AOL says that AIM isn't even their program, that everything is Microsoft's or Gateway's problem, they tell her it's AOL's problem. I'm trying to help her sort it all out from 3 states away. I DO NOT have AOL, but do have the latest version of AIM so that we may instant message each other. I'll be watching on here for any ideas that come up that could help Mom.

i also talked to an aol technical rep. he suggested to close down all programs aside from explorer, systray and aol. once that is done, he said that aol should run correctly. not really a good suggestion because he missed the entire point. he also suggested to reinstall the aol program.

I had a client that installed AOL 5 and got a Explorer performed an illegal operation etc...I had to restore the registry after uninstalling and it "fixed" the error.

For fun I tried AOL 6, same error and same solution. I even used the patch that Microsoft recommended w/regard to a modem driver for this new Sony P4 system.

Anyone find a version of AOL 6 that works?

The above responses pretty much sum up my problem as well. I have a NEW Dell Inspiron running ME with a six month free AOL trial. When installed it gives the KERNEL32.DLL error. Dell says it's AOL, AOL says it's Dell or Microsoft. I was so incensed that I kept calling Dell and AOL for six hours (mostly hold time) and neither could solve or had ever heard of the problem. I found this thread through a search of AOL.com. You would figure they would have heard of the problem by now, but I would be greatful for any help that is out there!

The only was to solve the problem of the WAOL and the Kernel32.dll error message it to format and reload the system. The WAOL.exe file calls on the kernel32.dll file to start the program just like all the other programs on your system do. If you uninstall and reinstall AOL it does not help. The fact that AOL is not taking responsibility for their own software screw up is totally chicken s---.
