Have you tried running a virus scan?

you may also want to check your sys. config. util.

start > run > msconfig > start-up tab

uncheck all unused programs

Yes.I have unchecked all unused programs in the start-up.How do i clear all the dail up registry. Will this help to prevent the dial up from happening when i access the device manager. Also what does SUCATREG.exe.Mean? This is what zonealarm is telling me when i go to the device manager it wants to access the internet.Do i need this file? I tried to delete it and when i start up my computer it reinstalls this file.

From a quick search on the net looks like you MIGHT have the W32/Magistr virus strain on your pc since most of the google references to it are related to this virus.

However, I did say might have.

SUCATREG.EXE is basically the preferred method of pre-registering driver files.

Microsoft knowledge base article 232893 has this to say on the subject, which seems to apply:

If you copy an .inf file to the Inf folder or to the Inf\Other folder and copy a catalog file to Inf\Catalog folder then run Windows\System\sucatreg /I: Windows\Inf\Other\Driver.inf, the .inf file is registered correctly in the registry, along with the cryptographic signature in the crypto database.

(Special case for individual files) Run Sucatreg.exe /C.

Registers any catalogs in the Windows\Inf\Catalog folder (provided they have been copied there beforehand). This is useful for updating individual system files, not full driver packages. This only registers the driver files in the cryptographic database, rather than associating them with the .inf file in the registry. The preferred method for fully registering an .inf file and driver file is by using the /I switch.

Hope this info helps Richard,

Mark

This is a problem I have encountered a number of times before. If you use a personal firewall (and you should - there are many free ones like Tiny Personal Firewall or Zone Alarm) you will get the message
'Windows Catalog Registration' from your computer wants to connect to 207.46.197.113, port 80
when you select device manager. The program responsible is
c:\windows\system\sucatreg.exe
It has to do with driver signing within Windows.
Have a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q232/8/93.ASP
and
http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/desinit/digitsign.htm
To fix it, go to Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, go to Tab labeled Advanced, scroll down the list to the heading of Security, and Uncheck the box "Check for publisher’s certificate revocation". Click OK.

That was a standard answer - I know you have a firewall etc. :)
