Yesterday afternoon I found Windows ME upgrade on clearance for $18. This morning I am still awake trying to decide if browsing the clearance aisle was a good idea.

I have absolutely no sound whatsoever. I have a Soundblaster Pro on my laptap, and Creative Labs does not have an updated driver for Win ME. Of course, this is after uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, sound card, anything and everything I can think of. I can't go back to Win98 either because I deleted the uninstall to free up space to try a driver.

So what I want to know is, how hard is it to upgrade a soundcard on a laptop (266 MHz, MMX) and what works great with WinME. Buying a new laptop is not an option, unfortunately. Can't get a new one until I finish my dissertation. :-(

Thanks!

I believe that the sound card so to speak is built into your motherboard. You can not upgrade it on a laptop. You are going to have to back up your important data and reinstall Windows 98 if you want sound to work. Your machine is too old for Me anyway and although you didn't say, you probably don't have enough memory or hard drive space for it. There is no easy way around it. Hope you still have your copy of 98.

Eric is right... and the bad thing is that you dont have any legal recourse either because it was clearance (you cant even get your $18 back)...but you can at least try to get even .... write about microsoft deceptive advertizing on the upgrade box to the federal trade commision, better business bureau and your state attorney general office, you can also bug your congresman... just treat it as any other lemon

I had that same problem with a brand new Me comp with onboard sound. unfortunately i never did find a solution other than installing a new sound card.

Thanks for your comments and advice. I backed everything up before installing ME, and I have my 98 disks, so I can go back. I haven't had any other problems with ME but that (and from this BB I appear very fortunate)so I guess I lucked out somewhat. Thanks again!

Hi Maureen.

I could'nt agree more with the reponses you have received, But I do have one suggestion that might help.

Make a custard pie and when you next see Bill Gates let him have it ( SPLAT )

This usually works in Europe.

I hope this message cheered you up.

Peter.
