Comment:

Lost 'control panel' after (ab)using TweakUI.
System restore stored only initial install,
i.e. 2 days of work would be lost.
Any possibility of getting control panel
back somehow ???
Many thanks in anticipation

Problem lies in the registry. If you are comfortable editing the registry you can solve the problem without losing any information. Unfortunately I do not rember the specific edit nessecary. DO a search for sites dealing with registry edits and I think policys is the catagory this problem falls into. I'll look for the key in the mean time and post back if I find it before you do.

You will need to edit the registry since you cannot get to the control panel to change the settings in TweakUI.

the instructions for this are located here:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q274/8/49.ASP

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to remove the "NoControlPanel" value
from following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

I am facing a curious (but similar)problem on NT 4.0:
After opening the Control Panel, the CP extension
applets are refusing to open. However, the .cpl
files themselves are running okay,(when run by double clicking
the CPL icons from the system directory) . I've checked
the View/Options/File Types/ menu on explorer, and
it gives the correct association of CPL files with

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL %1,%*
